Art Adams post about Jannard and RED cameras

Without knowing much about the feud by looking at the guys' work it's obvious that he's a pixel f-ker rather than an artist. His images are average-good and when you are average you have to find your self worth somewhere - apparently he find it in knowing all the kinks in ANY camera system out there. I'm not RED lover, but when i read some of the comments (and he is making a few valid claims) an old Polish saying comes to mind: when the ballerina's skills are average - even a tiny thread of her dress bothers her.

He has a degree of talent and success, and is a good educator. Your ballerina analogy is simplistic and off target - a strength in details and the technical is simply that...that he favours it merely speaks to his personality. Why judge it as a flaw? Why the ad hominem attack?

Why the ad hominem attack?

Because the very thing that he complains about: RED skewing the perception of producers in favor of machines (or rather technological certainty) is EXACTLY what allows this guy to thrive by skewing the perception of producers in favor of the guy with the biggest data-bank of technical trivia. I just find it comical, nothing more. He eloquently talks about artistry of cinematography but i suspect if you actually started to talk to him about something that really matters: meaning of the image for example, you would start getting blank stares.

I learn a decent amount from Art, both technical and re "image and meaning"...perhaps more than any other blogger on the net. Thinking about it, it's pretty hard to find anything on image and meaning on the net (maybe I'm looking in the wrong places).

Sounds like you think of him as self-serving and manipulative...he doesn't come across that way to me. The opposite in fact. I do appreciate that he doesn't get nasty and personal, though.

"Rather than send a camera with a new sensor to a cinematographer who knows how to do extensive objective testing and risk him discovering that Red Dragon, like every other sensor out there, isn't perfect in every way, they'd rather send it to people who don't know how to do any of that but will say nothing but nice things about the new sensor"

So according to art, the guy who shot mutant chronicals (Geoff Boyle) knows more then Peter Lyons Collister which is a ASC member, Tom Lowe and Mark Toia...

The beta camera goes to people who worked with RED to help improve the camera, not to people who try to make a name for themselves by complaining about a camera online. Which is why all the footage is property of RED. Cause it's test footage not finished footage of the release camera.

I have a whole bucket with business cards of average-good DPs. They all are good at what they do and will deliver acceptable image. None of their work will blow your socks off. Many will spend countless hours talking tech crap and honestly if not for the fact that their work is just average i wouldn't mind. Unfortunately their work indeed is just average which means to me that they might be collecting a ton of tech knowledge BUT they are not expanding artistically (it's obvious in the images they make). And that to me IS a problem because i would much rather talk about meanings and philosophy than Logs and exposure charts. And maybe this is what really irks me. The dude is an example of the HUGE wave of filmmakers who have everything to say about "tech numbers" but very little to say about the spirit behind those numbers.

Not a discussion on Cinematography in any way shape or form and IMO we dont know all the facts with surety from any parties. Dont want this to turn into members arguing about it.
