arri?

You can never go wrong with Arri or Mole. As for a kit, assuming that you don't want to go with bigger instruments that require real AC distro, I would recommend a set of 650 Fresnels as being a great starting point. If you need daylight balanced instruments, then any of the smaller HMIs can't be beat.

I have an Arri Softbank IV kit that I have found to be indispensable. It has 2 150W fresnels, a 300W fresnel, a 650W fresnel, and a 1K open face light. You'd be surprised at how often the 150's come in handy. It's a little pricy for a "starter kit" but it will outlast your next 5 cameras.

I second the notion about the Softbank IV kit. It's extremely versatile if you can afford it. If money is tight you can always piece together a kit unit by unit - which might allow you a little more choice on accessories. For instance I'm not a big fan of their stands so I'd rather get Manfrotto or Matthews kit stands. The 300 is a good middle of the road light to start with. I find it the most versatile.

Softbank IV kit..best value for the money...I love mine...I'm treating myself to a second one at Christmas..

We have two of the Softbank IV kits. Probably the best, most versatile kits you can buy. Keep in mind, however, that dragging one all over creation is still a pain, it weighs about 72lbs and is pretty big for an average trunk.

The contents are great but I find myself grabbing just certain lights in a smaller case when I do one man shoots and don't take my big truck.

Best,

Dan

Hey,

Just did a quick google search for the arri softbank IV Tungsten 5 light kit. It seems to run $2,689.95. Does that sound about right? Are there any stores that might sell the kit used?

Mike

I think that I may have paid a little more for mine. Good luck finding it used. The Arri kits seem to hold their value very well in the used market, and it's very hard to find anyone willing to part with them.

Nope, get the Softbank IV, the Arri 150s are invaluable. Two of those are much more handy than an extra 650.

Arri's are great. Maybe a few Fresnals mixed with a couple higher wattage open face lights would be a good versatile kit.
