Arri Fell....

Hey guys,

Today my Arri 1K Fresnal light fell over and hit the ground pretty hard. When I inspected inside, the bulb shattered. However, the mirror is fine and the focus is fine. The focus knob moves back and forth with no problem. It's late right now, but I am running to a store tomorrow morning to pick up a new bulb to test out if it works.

Has anybody ever dropped an Arri? If so, did any damage occur other than a broken bulb? I am just concerned right now until I find out tomorrow morning... but it would be nice to know what I may expect.

If the mirror is fine and the focus is fine, there should not be a problem with any other parts? Is it possible for a ballast to break? Thanks.

There's no ballast inside the fresnel. I'd expect you'll probably be alright, Arri has a rock solid build quality which is why they cost an arm and a leg.

Most (if not all) tungsten instruments are pretty hard to damage if all of the mechanical parts are still working. Its usually just a few wires jumpered from the mains supply to the ceramic socket the lamp plugs into. Wouldnt hurt to shine a flashlight around in there and make sure any wires didnt come out of place or anything. They're usually in there quite securely though - chances are a new lamp and you'll be ready to roll. Might want to pick up some sandbags while you are out though :) At least it didnt fall on anyone...

Agreed, If you don't see any physical damage, I'd doubt you have a problem larger than a bulb. I think you'll be fine.

The only not easily replaceable part on a light is the body, everything else is easy and you will probably have to do at least some repairs to during the time you own it. You should have a spare bulb with you at all times, I usually have 1 on set and about 3 at home for every light I own.

Did this not long ago, no probs. Also crashed a 150 on a stand same thing, but all good.

We have this 3-piece Arri open face kit at work which is like 10 years old and all of the lamps must have fallen over at least 20 times each. On one there's a huge crack in the housing, on the other, the focus will hardly move (and only in vertical position). All of them still working well, though (except for the "difficult" focussing) :)
