Arri 650

Any other like an Altman, Desisti, or Mole Tweenie will do the same thing but that's a good price for an Arri.

just bear in mind you need globes and doors as well which will bring the price up to 400 or so.

No difference. Black one is used for Theater (So not to draw the audience's eye) and Blue is for Film&Video...

Thanks for the info. I'm building a kit for myself. I'm thinking about getting this Arri 650 Fresnel W/barn doors and an Arri 300 Fresnel W/barn doors to get it started.

That's very similar to my fresnel kit. I've got 2 650's, 1 300, 1 150. Doors and an array of scrims for all of them.

I put 'em all in this bag. Great kit, great lights.

TC, thats a very nice bag. What light stands are you using? I figure, instead of getting a pre maid kit with stuff i may not like to use, why not make one exactly the way i want it, with good quality lights. Thanks

Luke

I have both the Arri 650 and 300 fresnels. They're great, well-built lights, and very versatile. Starting out with the 650/300 combination plus the barn doors would be a good move. Picking up a few scrims is also a great idea. And don't cheap out on the light stands, fresnels get incredibly hot and you don't want to even think about knocking one over.

I'm definitely going to get some scrims with the purchase, along with a nice pair of tripods. Any suggestions on the tripods would be very helpfull, there are so many to chose from(Air Cushioned, General Purpose, Bogan, Arri...). I need to be able to place them in your average light kit bag much like what TC has. Also, TCs bag is very nice but very expensive. I definitely want to protect my investment with a nice bag but could i get some suggestions on one that is similar at about half that price. If i really shouldn't take the hit in quality, is TCs a good bag for the price. Any other suggestion. Thanks

Luke

I like Bogan stacker stands. You can fit more of them into smaller spaces. Air Cushioned is mostly just a gimick that doesn't help at all.

I rented an arri 650 Fresnel the other day. What a great light compared to my crappy Britek open-faced lights. But the Arri Stand that they provided with the light was total crap. My amvona.com ebay stands that I picked up for around $20 were way better quality. The arri stand seemed flimsy with plastic knobs. Was this just because it was a rental? By the way... I was gonna buy that light but the price of barndoors/bulbs and things drives it way up. Instead I am saving some cash for a d2 softbank kit... you can swing one with bulbs, scrims, stands/barndoors and a chimera among some other things for around $1799.

I disagree.
The Amvona light stand I got for $30 bux was crap.
It has plastic collars & knobs.

Not as good as ARRI.
The ARRI's I've used have metal colllars.

Which amvona stand did you get? I got the 806 - Air cusioned. It has cast metal collars. I can't believe the quality for the price. Maybe they just gave me a cheap arri stand with the rental.

My mistake, I just looked at it again.
The Amvona collars are metal.

I had bought two cheapo light stands off ebay, one Amvona, and another no name.

I mixed them up.

For the money it's good.

I know this is old, but Ebays the way to go... I picked up 3 Arri 650's and 4 13' 3364 Bogen stands for a little under $800 bucks shipped with barn doors and bulbs. Can't beat that! Also Picked up an Altman 1K Fresnel for $130... Just in the past 2 days. The trick is to find a seller and email them direct to see if they have any other items they haven't listed yet... They see if they will sell you a few items at the same time at a deep discount...

After reading through all these light kit threads, the one thing people seem to miss is gloves. Make sure you've got a good pair of gloves (I recomend setwear). These will be invaluable when you are adjusting the lights once on and wrapping them soon after you turn them off.
