Arri 2000 Watt Stopped Working

Hey, my Arri 2000 light suddenly stopped working without any signs of problems. We put the bulb into another Arri 2000 and it works fine. It started off by not working if we connected the light to an extension cord. We unplugged the extension cord and plugged it directly into an outlet. And then from there, it stopped working. Could this possibly be due to the Arri power cord? If so, is this replaceable? Thanks.

These things are pretty simple. There's basically the power cord, perhaps some intermediary connection inside between the power cord and socket but thats it. So, it pretty much has to be power cord, inside wiring or bad socket in that order. If you can't trouble shoot it yourself, what choice do you have but to take it in for Arri service to look at? The first step is using a multimeter to check all the continuity between plug and socket and find where the break is, then just fix it with a replacement part for whatever.

Doing it yourself is a good learning experience and it is really easy to do. Lights break, when they do it on a set knowing how to repair them could save you a lot of headaches.

If you don't have a multimeter, or don't know how to use one, get the cheap one from Harbor Freight. It is only about $3, so if you break it you won't feel so bad.

Sniffers are also a good tool for fixing these lights. Just keep going up the line to see when the power stops. Then you know that's where the break is. Also a 10 dollar item that's good to have around.

Definitely do it yourself though, the first light I learned how to fix was an open faced arri 2k, so you shouldn't have any problems. Just remember to unplug the lamp first!

Chris is right. The switches on these high amp lights take a real beating. I would start there and then move to the plug itself. The resistance at 2000 watts puts a strain on all the contact points.

Yeah...usually the switch or it also happens a lot at the head because people don't strain relieve the cord.
