Argh!  Premiere!

Hey guys,

I've been having trouble with premiere and I'm not sure what to do. I can't tell if it's just my camera, my computer, my software....

I've been having lots of blocky footage and what look like tape drop outs. I don't think it is premiere or my computer because I have captured and edited material from my PV-GS70 with no problems. I did install the SP2 but I'm still not 100% convinced that this is the problem.

I rendered out a short uncompressed (ie approx 20sec) clip that I shot 30p but my computer refuses to play it back smoothly... I can play HD footage with less stutter than this!

Suggestions?

A few other questions too:

If my heads are dirty can I get one of those cleaning tapes? Will it work or do I have to have the thing serviced?

Also, does MBE work with premiere pro 1? I can't seem to figure it out.

Re: Argh!  Premiere!

Hey Shaw,

I just rendered out some 30p footage uncompressed and it played back fine; even full screen. Here's just some thoughts:

- have you watched the playback on the camera itself? Do you see the problem there? Are you seeing any dropouts counted while capturing the video to your PC?

- have you tried just playing back the raw captured footage? Do you see the problem there? Or is it only after it's been rendered by Premiere?

- what are you using to do the playback? Which codec your player is using could be critical. If you're using Windows Media Player, right click on the clip title on the right and look under properties for the codec it's using. For me it just says "DV Video Decoder".

-is the stuttering playback in Premiere itself? If so, check your playback settings on the monitor window. If your camera is still connected to your PC, Premiere may be trying to do the playback on the PC and the camera. That usually doesn't playback smoothly for me.

- how fragmented is your disk? If the clip is fragmented all over the disk it could effect playback.

- what kind of disk drive are you playing back from? Is it an internal IDE or SCSI drive? Is it a USB-connected drive? Maybe it can't handle the sustained bandwidth of uncompressed video. Do other uncompressed clips play back fine from the same drive?

As for your other questions, the general consensus seems to be to avoid using a cleaning tape as much as possible. I always carry one (and have used one) just in case I have a problem in the field. First I'd try to confirm that the problem is, in fact, with your camera.

Re: Argh!  Premiere!

This sounds like a MiniDV tape dropout issue to me...

Try to capture footage using a fresh tape, Good luck!

Re: Argh!  Premiere!

I had major problems with SP2 and smooth playback in premiere and AVID. Reload if you can - it fixed my problems.

Re: Argh!  Premiere!

I' ve got almost the same problem. I connect my dvx to my pc on premiere to have a preview on a tv monitor of what I'm editing and I see these blocks (Drop-out like). Even when I try to capture from my dvx I'll have the same errors. I tried another DVX and its still the same - so there must be something wrong with my pc.
Strangely enough my pc works fine with a small consumer camcorder!
I don't know what it might be. I have a Pentium 4 512MB ram 160GB hdd (8MB buffer)-CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE? Could it be a low ram problem? If so, why does a small consumer dv camcorder work fine?

Thank You all
