areas of underexposure

I have been shooting a short film that happens mostly at night. I'm exposing for an F 2.8, with faces underlit and highlights at 85 ire. I'm getting noisy backgrounds, that I suspect are underexposed, but I like the overall look. I wouldn't want to increase the light in those backgrounds. Any suggestions?

The only thing i can suggest, since i assume you are using tungsten balanced lights, is to shoot the scene slightly brighter. get those highlights up around 95, then in post you can easily adjust the curves and darken your footage to how you want it to look. Also make sure that your gain switch isn't accidently on.

It's my understanding that you can reduce noise levels using the Detail Coring or by reducing the Detail Level. If you have the Detail Level high, up the Detail Coring to smooth out the noise a bit. I've found it tricky to get the noise out but it's possible to get really nice.

If you are getting NOISE; you do not have enough light. Compensate with light and drop levels in post.
