Are Wedding Shooters Filmmakers?

Wouldn't that imply having control over the outcome? Now, I'd buy that IF as the B&G are about to kiss, Ninjas start swinging in, and Uzis spraying everywhere... Then I'd call him a Film maker.

That sounds like a Chinatown wedding around these parts.

Think John Woo slomo with soft lighting and fake film filters.

I would say any camera.

I dunno. There already are about a half dozen or so Wedding & Event Videography forums on the net that cater to everybody.

I shoot all DVX weddings myself and would rather have a forum specifically for people who shoot DVX/HVX weddings.

This way, Jarred would be able to easily add a new forum to the Filmmaking section and not have to dump us into the the Other Cameras section.

After all, this is DVXuser.

Why should the camera make any difference?

It doesn't really.

It's just that the other wedding videography forums are full of newbs and boobs. You know the type: they purchase all their gear on sale at Best Buy.

What's going to make this new forum any different?

Wasn't there a whole "Exclusive Camera Battle" last year. All the Canon and Sony guys got upset when those sections were being re-arranged. The site is called DVXuser.

Got pretty ugly.

What a BIG can of worms have been opened up here, I do not call myself a film maker cause I have never been remotely involved with making a "FILM" I do make wedding video's and I do not need to do it for a living. I would think that the majority of members have probably never even seen a movie "FILM" camera let alone used one but we all I suspect own and use a video camera for whatever purpose so I would say that if a movie was shot using video cameras which is becoming more and more common then IMHO I would say that they have made a VIDEO MOVIE because the medium they used was not "FILM" and again IMHO I would say that everybody could be classed as a movie maker but using different forms of media at the end of the day we are all producing moving pictures to entertain someone. Where not the early film makers called "MOVIE" makers

That's funny you said that...

When I see credits for movies shot on video it reads..."A ___ Film" or "A film by ______" I've never seen "A ____ Movie (or Video)" or "A movie (or video) by _______".... I think it sounds better to use "film" instead of "movie" or "video"... but I find myself saying, "But it wasn't shot on film." So I confuse myself at the same time credits confuse me... So that's double confusion haha... "Double Confusion" -- Could be a title for a movie... haha

If anybody has an opinion on that besides saying, "film sounds better than movie or video" I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Thanks

Yes I agree that film maker does have a better ring to it but there is where for the want of a better word is the snobbery side of things and I am certainly not saying that anyone making films is a snob. Over here on the other side of the pond if you called a heating engineer a plumber he would take offence at it although to all intent and purpose they are both fitting pipes together to carry water, it's just that one uses copper pipes and the other uses iron pipes and so it is I think with this discussion. I wonder how many members have made films using acetate film I would suspect very few. But would like opinions from anyone who has done commercially.

Regards Alan

Just curious to see how many wedding/event shooters are roaming DVXuser these days. Are there enough of us to make a home of our own here on the board? Jarred isn't sure, but suggested a test of the waters.

So, if I may, a roll call. Who's out there?

Maybe we can start of this gathering with a question (and a wink to Jarred):

Can wedding videographers justifiably be called "filmmakers"? Some could argue that because there is no script it would not appropriately fall into that category. Others, however, might say that like many documentaries a narrator isn't always necessary to tell a story.

Who wants to chime in?

Although I no longer do weddings, I still believe that there is no better place to get your feet wet in this industry - it's all on you, you get one take, and the MOST demanding producer ain't got NOTHING on a bride on her wedding day. As for no script being the dividing line - that's simply horsehockey. A narrator is most CERTAINLY NOT necessary in a documentary - just ask DA Pennebaker. Hats off to all of you FILMMAKERS who are currently doing weddings!!!

Finally.

Would this be limited to DVX/HVX weddings or any weddings shot with any camera?
As others have pointed out, this is DVXuser -- so I think that's automatically going to generally limit things to DVX/HVX. That is certainly the great appeal to me over what's already out there in the wedding forum universe. Although with that said, I certainly wouldn't want to have some Star-bellied Sneetches kind of thing going where we barred everyone else. It is the filmmaker (moviemaker, whatever you want to call it) emphasis here, that makes DVXuser more than just a forum for those who shoot with a particular camera.

I think that it depends on what the subject matter is. Is it going to be a place to discuss techniques and bride horror stories, or is it going to be a place where people show their work? The dvx section already has a clips section, so videos could still go in that. Otherwise, I would think that this could go in the filmmaking section, since the other topics in there are not dvx exclusive.

I love to see dvx wedding footage, but I know in my case, I shoot with a dvx but the wedding production company I freelance for uses sony hdv cameras, so I would not want that to instatly exclude me from the conversation.

Yes, the World does not revolve around the DVX, and people aren't necessarily using them to work. So, just because this is DVXuser, do we need yet another forum to field the same questions that have been asked in every other DVX related thread? "What's the best filters to use on my DVX for weddings?" "What's the best settings for my DVX doing weddings?" The thread is supposed to be about wedding and event videography, not the DVX.

I agree so many more things also go into play when doing a wedding or other event aside from which camera to use and it's settings.

Documentary is correct. It is not the filmakers 'movie' but some artistic license is allowed I would think. Then there's lighting/framing techniques but in the end it is not meant to show off 'your' work or talent. It is about them & the wedding, not you. Still, they want nice photography don't they. I guess it's a thankless job. But if it's done bad, woohoo...watch out. But I hear there's good money in it. Never tried it myself and don't have plans to. But somebody's got to do it and hopefully someone good. :)

I'd definitely support there being a wedding/event section.

Hey Barry,

It's been nice to see the guy who literally wrote the book on the DVX chiming in on this discusion. If you don't mind me asking, what's your involvement/interest in wedding/event work?

Just curious if this new section would house a clips section specifically for weddings and events? If you're discussing techniques or tips, wouldn't it be easier and more beneficial to show and tell in the same area?

As it is, wedding / event clips get dumped down the list fast in the normal clips section.
