Are we still making films?

I haven't done a thing in sooo long sans 1 st AD for Tim and Mark. And even that was ages ago.

Those of you that know the story; it's been a long time rebuilding, regrouping and getting to a place of stability.

I'd like to get back into the swing as we speak; went to get my MOBO fixed (My comp with my NLE) and the company is gone; literally gone. Along with my Workstation.

So now I'm on the hunt for a new computer to edit on. Sigh ..............

But, I am feeling a surge of creativity. It's amazing what financial security can do for your creative juices.

Go on a road trip... massive right-brain surge throughout. My ideal directing career would be to make a film, go on a road trip (while writing the next one), then repeat (dozens of times!).

I'm reading Judith Weston's newest book "Director's Intuition," and the first section on intuition is all about creative exercises and right-brained writing/directing. Highly recommended. I usually read a few pages and end up pacing around the house talking to myself.

"Directing Actors" is always recommended around here, so I assume most have read it by now, but I can assure you that this new book is not a rehash of that material.

No, it sure isn't. It takes everything to another level. We spend a lot of time thinking about the visual aspects of film (and well we should), but Weston adds so much more by incorporating all the necessary elements that make a film more than a collection of really cool shots.

Getting back to Nate's original thought in this thread, I've noticed it too. I feel the reason is because they're not production journals anymore like they should be. It's all about, "Hey, this is what I did, let me know what you think", which as has been pointed out, many people can't take. As was also mentioned, 90% of the time the filmmakers end up just talking to themselves. Very true. It's one of the reasons I moved my journal to a real blog and I post links in the thread when I update my blog. That way anyone who really does want to follow my progress can do so, and I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.

Aw man, wish I had the time to create production journals.

Still remember a very interesting short you did for one of the dvxuser fests, John. Looking forward to see your new projects. Also do get one of those DSLR's and a couple of fast primes. A 550D or a GH1 suffice. FOr filmmaking, they are much, much better than our DVX's or HVX's...

It is hard to find time to do it. I wish things were moving faster so I'd have more to talk about in mine, but it's going pretty well so far. I have to find a place to cast though.

Corrado and A Lonely Place were the best UF threads. I agree, as a user that now frequents the UF, screenwriting and business section more than other sub forums (I'm way over the hdslr sections, go there and see why) I notice the threads at the top of the UF are mostly the filmmakers talking to themselves with meaningless updates.

Adams thread sparked serious conversation and when he did update, no matter who liked it or did not, people were engaged.

Let's see some material and read some insightful posts. Posters, bts, grabs etc.

The shortest update I want yo read is "sold!". And, even then, please elaborate! Haha.

Guilty as charged with regards to ignoring the UF section. When I get back to home base from a trip I am currently on it will be one of my first stops. It is IMO the most inspirational spot of the forums.

Agreed. Or, Motivational.

Tools no longer a big deal. Choose what you can afford to use and get on with it, for the most part.

Thing is, back in the day if a film was remotely interesting, people wanted to know about it. But I too think some of us have become so used to the digital filmmaking thing it's no big deal anymore. When these cams (the DVX100 and the XL/GLs) first came out we were thrilled to know we could shoot a film on video. We wanted as much knowledge and info about it as possible. And it was something for everybody in the UF thread. Now it's like, "Oh, someone else is shooting a film. Whatever."

I will admit Corrado and ALPFD were incredible threads with professional work all through them. But what about Brandon's "No Greater Love" which did get big distribution and Faith's "Deuce of Spades." They were pretty hot too. "Deuce of Spades" is still going strong. "Striken" is also a very good thread, "The Jones" is pretty sweet and "Leap: ROB" is very interesting and is currently in production, (Chris updates almost every night and is showcasing his stuff), R.L. Scotts new trailer for a great looking martial arts flick called "Champion Road: Arena" is there, the hilarious video game parody Modern War Gear Solid has over 300,000 on Youtube, and there's even a "Modest Mouse" spec video shot on Super 8 that's absolutely bananas. Not to mention my primer for low-budget/indy filmmakers could use some additional comments and advice (lighting, experiences, DYI methods, location scouting), and I'm also in pre-production on my film (see my sig). Trust me guys, there's a lot going on over there and a lot of newbies are joining DVX.

This doesnt have anything to do with the posts above me. But maybe there should be a limit of how many films, trailers, footage. Get's posted in the User Film in 1 day.

I'll tell you what, once we have the first episode in the can, and the EP's allow me, I will start a thread and share what is going on with my latest project I am producing (since it is not going into festival).

Just a hint: Episodic Action Series that utilizes every one of my skills and pushes them to the limits.

BTW: Just saw your Title, Nathyn. NICE!!!!!! LOL

Thanks. We're casting this week. I just need to find a place here in Chicago. I'm looking at Columbia College, but I need to get through the red tape.

I gave you guys a shout out. If you're missing "Modern War Gear Solid" on youtube, you're missing a very funny film, especially if you like video games. It's got close to 400,000 views on YT. Personally I find your "The Truth Behind The Street Fighter Movie !!!" short funny and also sad because it's probably close to what really happened. It reminds me of the the Michael Jackson song "They don't care about us" only this time it's talking about fans who want a good movie based on a video game or comic book franchise. It's really not hard to do with millions of dollars at your disposal, so when it's done wrong the only other reason that makes sense is they just don't care about us or the movies they're making.

Agreed.

Finally saw Corrado the other day and it's a unfortunately a very bad film. Hoping ALPFD is better. Anyone know if it will ever be released outside festivals?

I think the thing was that it made it into distribution, which is what many of us are looking for.
