Are we all B-Movie Directors trying to be Real Directors? [B-Movie vs Real Movie]

I think it would be fun to actually see big Hollywood directors make a film with the average low budget resources of the typical local film festival entry. Like a 3,000 dollar budget tops, with absolutely no help or freebies from Hollywood contacts or pros, with local small town talent and a non pro crew.
The only confession I would give them is the script. They get an average Hollywood budget fog the script but nothing else. Even a good director can't save a bad script so no point in making that.

Many directors started at an ultra-low budget for their first projects, although they may not have been features. Exceptions to this are those that began in other disciplines, such as writers, editors, actors, AD's, DP's etc. who at some point may be able to parlay a directing gig without having amassed a body of low-budget work.

One thing to consider about directors who came up more than 10-15 years ago: the cost of a ultra-low budget feature is far less now than it was then. You just couldn't make a feature for $3000 in the 90's. The cost of shooting on film was formidable and gear all across the board simply cost much more. So, if you read about someone making their first film for say $100,000, realize that that was an incredibly scrappy amount back in the day.

I don't know nuthin' 'bout nuthin' but some of what makes the brilliant guys brilliant is that, yes, even with jack squat money they could do great things. . .cause they know HOW/WHERE to spend that money, what they can get away with, what they can get for free, what they can work around, etc. etc.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Hollywood is not everybody's idea of the best cinema going. Many of the top Hollywood directors love and admire the cinema of international directors who make films on very limited resources (some for their whole career).

Roger Corman is on of the biggest B producers out there. Some of the directors that got their starts directing his movies: Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, James Cameron, John Sayles, Jonathan Demme to name a few.
