Are Vintage Lenses Radioactive? I have the answer!

The ones that are emitters used thorium in the glass. Here is a page with a list for your next experiment: http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses

Also there are 3 types of radiation: alpha, beta, and gamma. Be careful with your selection of radiation meters and use one that can detect the type of radiation emitted by our suspected source. Also know that the different types may be attenuated by materials between the emitter and the detector, e.g. a lens barrel.

Nice job on your production.

This is more of an issue for lens techs that disassemble and clean vintage lenses than it is for shooters. I have one older Taylor Hobson Sopelem 16mm zoom that has thorium glass elements in it. You can identify this pretty easily by the yellow/brown color cast these lenses take on when not exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.
