ARe Varizoom Focus Controllers good for different cameras?

I was at a buddy's house last night and he gave me his varizoom focus controller for his old XL-1. I plugged it into my DVX and I get bupkus.

Is it safe to assume there is a compatibility issue, since they offer different models for different cameras, or is there something I can do to make it work?

Canon's and Sony use a Lanc protocol Panasonic is all diferent , So it will not work and may cause damage...

Yeah, I was messing with some settings and plugged it in. It started recording...

I think I'll just leave it alone for now.
