Are Variable Framerates Going to be a Curse?

mmm

With the variable framerates on the HVX now avliable, I can just see slow-mo becoming the new indie-filmmaking obsession. It'll be great for music videos, but I bet it becomes really over-used in narrative stuff.

So my plea to anyone thinking of shooting in slow-mo is, please don't do it just because you can.

Pff... what are you kidding me? It's gonna' be Planet Quenton Tarnatino.

Get ready for NON-STOP slo-mo out da' wahzoo. Because it IS coming...

An eagle plucks a fish out of a cresting wave... GOOD slo-mo
Spitting out a mouthful of Listerine... BAD slo-mo
Unexpected killing betrayal at the climax of a flick... GOOD slo-mo
Detective Penski takes coffee cup from Grandma before questioning... BAD slo-mo

We'll see EVERY character introduced to a story via slo-mo... place your bets.

Slo-mo is gonna' be the Star Wipe of 2006.

Yum.... Star Wipes... LOL

Has anyone seen the Simpsons where Homer is editing the Ned Flander's Dating video using only Star Wipes.... made me laugh.

Hey! When you have access to something as sweet as a star wipe, why settle for second best, right?!

Slo-mo, like anything else is a story telling tool. It is neither good nor bad in and of itself, only in how it is used (or over used). If it makes the story better, by all means use it. If it adds nothing, don't . Just because you can, doesn't make it right. There are scenes that cry out for slow motion, remember Bo Derek running on the beach in "10"?

We had a girl in grad school that was a bit full of herself, and came to class one day in that era with the Bo Derek braids in her hair.

In one of the best spontaneous put downs I've ever seen, several guys started scrawling numbers on sheets of paper (6,4, -2) and holding them up as she walked down the aisle to her seat. I almost felt sorry for her.
