Are two disks necessary?

We are about to purchase a new PC for editing as previously mentioned, but my boss is asking if the second hard disk is necessary.

What should I tell him?

Re: Are two disks necessary?

..yes by all means.. you should have a differnt drive seperate from your system drive for AV content.. and you should actually have yet another drive for exporting finished content to.. that way your not trying to run the system and access content off the same drive.. and not trying to access ontent, and write new content to the same drive.. all when your machine is processing effects and other schlock and such. espescially if you want anything close to realtime performance.

And additional drives are so inexpensive these days. Also, new systems that come with SATA controllers usually include an EIDE controller. Therefore, you won't need to buy an additional controller card. That's what I did with my Dell.

Oh, and the SATA drives are fast enough to support both AV work and exporting. At least, that's according to Matrox and also from my own experience.

Re: Are two disks necessary?

Im gonna add a question here. It seems like it would be a basic question but it just came up recently and i realized I didn't know the answer.

Using PPro, lets say I have 2 drives just for AV. 1 drive for Dailies and 1 for scratchdisk.

Now, lets say I put an effect on the entire project so that I must render the entire timeline. Then, I want to export the timeline as a file.

Should i export to my Dailies Harddisk because PPro is actually accesses the render files on the scratchdisk? Or should I output the file to the scratchdisk because when exporting a file it re-renders the effects over again from the original Daily files?

Thanks,
lucas

strictly speaking, no, you absolutely do not have to get two drives.

but, with two drives it will be faster.

i own a business and i can see it both ways, i LOVE to tweak the hell out of my machine, my editing machine is crazy fast.

i make my employee's machines faster than normal if they are doing something that will save them real time during the course of the day because that will save me money.

that is the most honest way to explain it to your boss.

does he want to pay you to sit there starting at the screen while the computer does something that takes say 2 or 3 minutes or something that takes only a few seconds?

multiply that by something that you might do hundreds of times per day or even per hour.

i added a boot drive that is a 10k rpm sata drive and i swear it is a little bit faster.

i then added a separate sata drive JUST for the temp stuff that premiere, after effects and photoshop create and it got faster as well.

hell i even took a second drive and made the two drives into a stripe set to speed up the temp drive.

every little bit speeds it up and if you take signifigantly more time to do the same amount of work then you will in the end save money.

it would kind of be like a job where you have to move save 5,000 widgets from warehouse A to warehouse B.

if you have a widget handtruck that holds 5 widgets it will take you a lot longer than if you have a widget handtruck that will hold 20 widgets.

oh i almost forgot, tell him that with two drives you can make backups of what your working on incase the first drive crashes!

drives are so big these days its almost impossible to backup.

i have a huge raid 5 and there is nothing else to back it up to.
