Are they really that good?

Hey guys,

This is my first post after reading on dvxuser for a good 2 months now and my question is....Are Macs really "far superior to pc's" (as the guy at comp usa said as he walked up to me while i was browsing). Me being a windows guy all my life, im not really sure what makes macs so popular.

And also I've been using premiere(first 6.0, and now 1.5) and i was wondering if going from premiere to FCP was a big change.

Thanks, Nick

Re: Are they really that good?

There a many reasons that macs are better but here are the main ones: They are much more stable, Dont really have any viruses, no spyware, and an overall nicer user experience.
Basically Premiere and FCP are the same thing, with variations here and there. There are a few dedicated books for people that are comming from premiere to FCP, so check those out if you decide to go mac. You will not look back after you buy it.

Re: Are they really that good?

lol not this again...

i like macs, i think they're worth the cash if u have it, if u would rather spend that dough on an extra fancy pc and camera equipment, thats smart to as so many dvxusers are also happy pc users

are we really going to do this again?

Re: Are they really that good?

I've one and I'm very happy with it! I think it's a personnal choice.

Re: Are they really that good?

This is dangerous territory, but think how often you hear about people who "love their Macs" vs people who love their Windows machines. Hint, hint.

Re: Are they really that good?

Nowadays XP and OS X are both very reliable and very stable systems. FCP and Premiere are also both good solid programs with more or less identical interfaces. You can very easily move from one to the other.

So it's really a question of pros and cons. OSX/FCP are generally more expensive up front to buy, particularly the Mac hardware. You can definitely get into a PC system cheaper, and since you already are a PC user, you put that money into beefing up your system.

But whereas the PC system has the advantage in overall userbase, OS X/FCP has the userbase advantage among editors/filmmakers. It's a definite advantage to be using what everyone else is using. And if you're going to be dedicating a machine solely to editing, then FCP might be the system to get.

Re: Are they really that good?

Put it this way... Steve Jobs was recently asked by 3 of the top PC manufacturers to license OSX to them for use in their machines because they're sick of the problems of Windoze. Do the math.

Re: Are they really that good?

It is true that there are currently no known viruses for OSX, but it doesn't mean one won't come down the pike eventually. It's unlikely, as the creator of such a virus wouldn't cause much damage (it wouldn't spread very fast or to very many people as compared to the number of Windows users) which kind of defeats the purpose.

I can tell you that I do not worry about viruses at all. It almost never enters my mind. I like that.

You can get spyware on your mac. Limewire (popular with many a mac user) IS spyware.

I love my G5 and my G4. In the 5 years I've had macs, I've never had a system crash.
I'd never go back to Windows, but that doesn't mean amazing work can't be done on Windows. It obviously can and is.
For me, it's about using the most efficient tool and, in my case, that is the mac. The integration of hardware and software is worth the extra cost to me.
And I don't think the cost is as astronomically different in many cases as some would have you believe.

Re: Are they really that good?

i was a pc man for years. then i had some money that came in and had to be spent on a new computer. finally i went over to the dark side and bought a mac. i am forever lost. BUT AT LEAST EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT NOW. WOOPIE.............
i will never go back.

Re: Are they really that good?

If anyone has ever chosen, out of sheer preference, to go from Mac to PC, some reporter should do a feature article on them. The only thing I don't like about the Mac is that DVRack is PC-only.

Re: Are they really that good?

just think how many people have flight from PC to Mac and how many in the other direction. Me, nobody... All stay in Mac. It´s a conspiracy; the first time i put my hands in the G5 a big smile appeared on my face, and it´s still there, doesn´t go even if i try! Somethig to do with endorfins coming from the metal case. ;D

Re: Are they really that good?

now that the whole idea of getting another pc is put aside...now its time to decide what i want.

I'm trying to decide between a g5, and a powerbook.

Reasons i want a g5: stronger/faster, cheaper...kinda,

Reasons i want a pb: i can edit on the road,...and thats pretty much it haha

So anyone who has had to make a decision on these 2, help me out guys. thanks :)

Re: Are they really that good?

If you need to use while traveling get a PB. Fine for light FCP work.
If you're need to do heavy duty editing get the G5. You can easily add more memory/drives and it will be faster.

Re: Are they really that good?

I am fortunate enough to have both. I have a G5 with a 23" monitor, some great speakers, Apple production suite, PhotoShop CS. 1200 songs on iTunes, and I LOVE it. The smiles still on my face too. I've had it since the end of November, and it is an absolute joy to work on. However... I also have a 15" PowerBook thats 14 months old. I still actually spend more time on the PowerBook. I have digital high speed cable, with Airport, and for alot of work, answering e mail, internet research, minor editing, some PhotoShop work, etc, there is nothing better than kicking back with the laptop and the sofa with the feet up. The G5 is great for more serious editing, critical PhotoShop work, and huge screen work. But the laptop... so sweet. So to answer your question, you only live once, GET BOTH, you won't be sorry. I always tell my wife, we may not have the nicest house, no boat or vacation home, but we've got the best computers and cameras of anyone else we know! What else really matters??

Re: Are they really that good?

So if im gonna be having a lot of video on it(the computer) than the pb is a no no??

ahhh...tough choices..good thing its gonna be a while before i can get it.
