Are the DVX100A XLR inputs excessively noisy?

Just attached a 4073a to the camera and was shocked to hear how much background hiss there was on the soundtrack. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this the way the camera is? This is the first time I've attached an external mic to the camera, so perhpas I'm just expecting too much?!

Re: Are the DVX100A XLR inputs excessively noisy?

Quite the opposite -- the DVX XLR's are the cleanest and quietest of any $5000-and-below camera.

You're probably hearing the headphone hiss. The 100A got an amplified headphone circuit, but along with the amplification came hiss. But the audio that's actually recorded should be pristine and hiss-free.

Between that, and the echo in 24P, I nearly crapped my pants the first time I hooked up a mic. I thought my camera was broken.

Re: Are the DVX100A XLR inputs excessively noisy?

Are you sure it's hiss, or could it just be ambient sound?

Re: Are the DVX100A XLR inputs excessively noisy?

There is definitely hiss in the headphone circuit, and it's not ambient noise: it's present even if you select Input 1/2, and don't plug anything into the XLR jacks. It's present if you turn the levels on both channels all the way down.

for a cleaner monitor, try the RCA jacks. You can make up an adapter to go from 2 RCA's to 1/4" or 1/8". The problem here is that the level isn't very high and not controllable. But it will give you a truer picture of your sound.

Right you were! I tried recording in a flat, isolated environment and when amplified through a system, the sound was very clean. Still slightly noisy, but well above average for a prosumer camera!
