Are P2 Cards a Necessity?

I thought I knew, but now I'm not sure...

My head is swimming with the possiblities of this camera.

Are the P2 cards required to record anything better than DV25?

Is it possible to have the camera interface with an external hard drive (only) WITHOUT having any P2 cards in the camera?

I was considering just having the camera send signal to the capture window of an NLE on a laptop, but then I thought I read somewhere that you could connect a hard drive to the camera to actually send files to as the camera records.

You can record to either the cards, or to a device hooked up to the firewire port. That device can be a computer (like FCP or Avid XPress Pro HD) or it can be a FireStore type of device.

The cards are necessary if you want to capture DV50 or DVHD without using any firewire-connected device.

And no, you can't just plug in any hard disk and record to it, just like you can't do that on any other camera either. There has to be some sort of controller (such as a FireStore).

You can connect a drive straight to the camera and offload the contents of the cam's P2 cards, but obviously that requires having recorded onto P2 first.

You can just have the camera send its signal to the capture window of an NLE, yes.

Does the Firestore Work?

Does the Firestore Work?

I have recently purchased my HVX which arrives today and I have been looking at the Firestore, their data sheet says only the unreleased firestore will support the HVX200, does anyone have expereince with an existing firestore?

An existing firestore could only be used for DV. If you want to capture DV50 or high-def, you'd need the new forthcoming FS100.
