Are "Gaming Computers" good ?

There is a company in Germany called Inside-Multimedia. The only thing they do is building computers for video editing. www.inside-mm.de. You may want to check them out to see how a "beast" looks like. They have absolute killer-machines and win award for it all the time. And the are reasonable priced. But unfortunately for you, i guess, they are german boys.
Have a look.

Actually the line between defining a "gaming" machine and a "workstation" is really-really thin, technology as it is now has become universal and less exclusive which means that a gaming computer could easily be called a workstation if it is being used as such, the problem with "gaming" computers is that their technology is new, untested in professional software and very versatile to be covered by professional software\hardware vendors. The other problem is politics, because vendors tend to only support specific types of hardware due to agreements and similar under-the-table stuff.

Usually what really separates the two is processor type (server style Opteron or Xeon) memory type (ECC, registered) and graphics card (i.e Quadro cards)

There are two ways to build a workstation. The first one is to build it yourself with tested and proven components (by research) which is what I do and is cheaper with more control over your machine and the second is to buy a ready made machine and be done with it, but your pocket will probably burn. The second option is always the best for post houses, but I believe computer savvy freelancers can always find cheaper ways to do the same thing..

Cheers.
