Are drones taking over the cineworld

After filming on lots of formats using all sorts of cranes, jibs, dollys, etc. I capitulated a bought a drone with a Hero 4 black. With a little patience it rises, tracks and dollys with a minimum of fuss apart from noise.
Here's something we shot that I think would have cost a small fortune a little while ago. We did this in between 5.30am - 7am with two people. Golden light, perfect conditions. Although it's just a tool for a specific purpose, it's a powerful one. Shooting 1440, 2.7K and 4K on a fixed (very wide) lens I'm wondering what others think.

I'd be embarrassed to post that video! Haha, Kidding, it's stunning actually. Great work, beautiful compositions, In other words, I loved it!! One of the best looking quad vids I've watched thus far.

Thanks Maran glad you like it. I guess cinematography is always undergoing change. Years ago we had grips and gaffers going through tough times to the point where we don't seem them much anymore except on big budgets. Drones work spectacularly well in close as well as in the traditional up above looking down set-ups which they are more associated with. I can use mine inside a studio with prop guards (watch the light stand) for any number of moving shots. As we have all read, the quality from a tiny camera like a go-pro or a mounted DSLR like a GH4 makes it a tougher environment for traditional set-ups and I'm wondering if the whole drone thing will be a game changer.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate it.
Nate, I use 1440 tall as it's easy to process and I can move the image down to cut out the props without scaling. Mic Bergsma on youtube has a great tutorial about formats and what works best.
The other 2 formats really grind along slowly especially when you add effects. Plus, do I really need 2.7K and 4K, well not yet, but one day I'll upgrade and hopefully get my stuff shown as a theatrical release. None of the shots are 2.7 or 4K as yet.

Absolutely stunning. I had a helicopter with the gimballed Planet Earth mount for a discovery show a few years ago. Shot all day and I don't think we got any shots quit this sweet (though we got what we needed and it was a solid day). Price for that day including me, the chopper, camera, pilot, operator. About 16k.

In short, good purchase!!

Thanks Cosimo, we waited 3 weeks for a 2 hour window and by 7:30am the light was gone and the wind up - the luxury of shooting stock for yourself...

Are drones taking over the shots where the camera needs to be flying? Yes. Are drones taking over the cineworld. No.

Great footage. Did the GoPro Hero 4 work without any adjusting on the Zenmuse H3 3D? As some people have had issues with it as it is a bit heavier than the Hero 3+. Also did you use an ND filter as I cannot see any jello and that is about the only weak point from the P2/H3 3D setup. If you did not use a ND filter how did you get such good jello free shots?

cheers

Hi Bill and thanks glad you liked it.
The gimbal has been rebalanced slightly with a brass offcut as it tilts to the left with the hero 4, we also had to shave around the settings button. No ND and no jello, I didn't know that was a problem - what do you mean exactly.
