Are craigslist and mandy still this bad?

I quit working as an editor months ago due to health reasons and got a more relaxing job in the healthcare industry. One of my favorite things to do during my downtime is looking up film and editing jobs on craigslist and mandy for giggles.

It's still sad how many "companies" (aka production run out of some former film industry employee's basement) are still offering "no pay and credit only" jobs. I lol'ed quite a bit seeing that a film production I turned down over a year ago is STILL trying to get editor on their project.:2vrolijk_08:

I know not all "free" jobs are bad, but with the current economy and state of the film industry today, I think people really need to consider their own expenses rather than just trying so hard to get a "film credit".

I've only gotten 4-5 jobs total with mandy and craigslist and was able to secure one long job through word of mouth, then a reality TV gig also through word of mouth which I had to quit due to my health.

I know people will do anything to break into the industry, but I think most of you will echo my sentiments that people really need to decide how much they're worth far before they step into the harsh paying world of film.

It is all over the place here... and what really kills me is the list of demands they put up before they say "no pay"... I might be more inclined to do something to help out in the community if people were not so demanding with their tone when posting these type of ads...

You can, on very rare occasion find real jobs on CL but its not exactly the place to look for or expect quality or professional paid work. We've picked up 2-3 clients over the years from it and quite a few good crew members; but... we always charged and paid professional level fees. Most of that success on CL is either from out-of-town companies coming here to shoot or when we need spare crew in a distant location.

When posting CL ads we're very specific and even say "no beginners, no kidding" yet we get tons of responses from people begging for a chance. We select those with experience and more importantly those who are actively working and making a living (or trying). We don't hire the ones "who always wanted to...".

If you are affected or feel affected by the no-pay low-pay work offers and/or those who accept them it's probably time to fish in a bigger pond and reevaluate your own marketing / networking mind-set in the business. CL is no place to build your business or your resume. Trolling or dwelling on CL or low-ballers is time and effort you should put into quality time planning and building your clientele using a more professional approach.

Very good point! To be honest I look with a mix of finding a posting such as the one you speak of and also as a mild form of entertainment... I have freelanced for five years and the point I am at seems to involve alot of networking amongst people who are working the medium to large-ish productions around town and getting in there...
