Archiving projects

Dear all,

Before, I archived my projects by exporting their timelines to a DV tape. Now I am looking for a different kind of storage. I purchased an external hard drive, but now the question is:

What is a good way to export a project for storage? I expect it to be one of the uncompressed render settings, right? I would like some input from someone who has experience with archiving projects this way.

Also, next to a render, what else is a good idea to store? I was thinking about the timeline. How would that work, and, is that even possible?

Thank you for your time!

Rgrds, Chris

you want the ability to re-edit the original files at a later time or just to store the data exactly as they are on the timeline as one video format?

I want to store the data exactly as they are on the timeline, yea. If possible, to edit the timeline data later. But the first one is the original idea. What would you suggest, for both?

I'd just archive the NLE project file and the original footage used to create it, and the best final render, but only the render if you have the room.
You can always re render any time as long as you have what you used to get you there.

since this is in the premiere section, you probably are using premiere as your nle.

okay, save the project as in file->save or file->save project(you should have something similar to that in the file menu), and also save the folder with all the original files. and file-> save edl and file->save xml.
now you should have a project file, edl, xml, and a folder with all the raw footage. if you have all that in a folder that should do it. also try to copy that folder and test it to see if you can recreate the timeline just to make sure everything is in order.

you can name the files that you create while you create them, adding the nle version, and the date you archived. also naming the folder by something organized and recognizable and search-able, like adding the date and project name.

you can backup the same folder on a different drive depending on how 'precious' the footage is to you.

that should do it, depending on your ocd level.

That worked perfectly! Thanks.

Now I am also looking for the best possible render. Figure I should pick an uncompressed avi. Uncompressed Microsoft Avi, or a Microsoft Avi on the best quality?

A question about the first. Standard settings suggest an output of 720x480, while my source is 720x568. Why this export trying to scale down the media? Obviously I do not know enough about this to figure it out. Should I scale it back to match the output sizes with the source and project?

A second question. There is a pretty big difference in file size between an Avi render with no codec selected and an uncompressed microsoft avi export. Why is this? Is there a big quality difference?
