Archives???

What would be the best format for archiving video for storage?
Would it be best to burn them to DVD as mpegs or
put them on a CD-ROM as an AVI. I guess I would want the most original
format... as natural as possible, thus freeing up the original raw tapes.
Or... should I just attempt to keep the raw tapes safe and sound...
(pun almost intended)...

I would output them as uncompressed .avi and then burn these files to DVD as data. I would also make two sets (minimum) as redundancy is the best method of reliability that I know of.
