Aputure updates the Amaran HR672 with Tri-8. 25% brighter and aluminum body

I like the HR672 lights a lot and now Aputure made a new updated model that has the same aluminum build as the Light Storm models. The HR672 has 672 LEDS while the Amaran Tr-8 has 888 LED's and is 25% brighter. The good news here is if you have the Aputure EZ Box or other accessories for the Amaran HR 672 they will work with the Tri-8. Still uses Sony NPF batteries but now has a D-Tap option as well. Looks like a nice solid light.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Are those handles removable or can you fold them flat? If they're fixed, it would be kinda tough to find a good bag to carry them around.

At this time they aren't removable. I was thinking the same. Maybe Aputure will change the design but I don't think so.

This is kind of awkward. They advertise it as "Ipad thin" and yet the slap on those handles that makes them 3-4 times thicker. Really strange.
Other than that Aputure is totally crashing affordable led lighting market. Such a value for so little!!

Getting ready to buy a couple of the LS 1S but this looks like a good third light for hairlight or backlight for painting walls. I may wait for this or look for some killer deals in the 672s for that third light.

I love my 672s, but there is no question that build quality is a delicate affair. I baby mine for the most part, but the battery contacts are no longer solid (I have to use a rubber band to pull the two NFP batteries inward for full contact).

But the quality and quantity of light is very good for the size and price. It makes a perfect hair light, especially after softening it a bit with a D-fuse softbox.

The new Tri-8 looks to resolve these issues with the new battery releases, a more robust metal body, etc.

Bottom line is that if we feel like the handles need to be foldable, Ted Sim and the rest of the Aputure team should hear it from us loud and clear since their responsiveness to customer requests is among the very best I've seen in the industry.

They really are killing it.

Very good point!
Go to their Facebook Page and leave a comment on features you like and the ones you don't. Aputure is very interested in what you have to say.

One upside of the scattered LED arrangement is that it mitigates - to some extent - the segmented shadow approach. I saw it at IBC and thought it was quite nice.

I think you just talked me out of the 672s ;-) I fly all over the world and my cases always get thrown and beat up. Don't want to land in Timbuktu and discover my 672s in pieces. I use Pelican, Storm cases with lots of extra foam and towels but when stuff just gets abused by the airlines, it falls apart. Aluminum sounds much more robust. Maybe I will still pick up my pair of LS 1S and one of the new TR-8s for Christmas?

Yeah, I love the amaran and a lot of people use them regularly with no complaints, but if I were starting fresh, I'd definitely go Tri-8 and Ls1. A very real advantage of the Amaran is ultra portability/lightweight. If you want to throw them in a backpack for something where you need to hike to a spot, etc, then they are amazing power and quality of light for such a lightweight panel.

Just bought two of the LS 1S. One was defective so waiting on the replacement for a shoot next week. Any update on this new TR-8 availability? I know Erik said possibly December, anyone hear anything else as far as delivery dates yet?
