Anyone here use the Aputure Amaran 672 lights? If you're shooting interviews, is better to go with the 2 floods (672w) & 1 spot (672s) or 2 spots & 1 flood kit?

I use those lights. None of them will give you enough punch (once softened) for a key in many situations, so while I like the color rendition and the price, I can't recommend them unless you already have a good key light. I recommend the LS1s panel for key. Or, the Cob120 if you want a single source with bowens mount.

For interviews, I regularly find myself using the LS1 at or near full power once it's diffused enough to be a nice key light.

Yeah I have to make them work for now (672) but am really looking forward to the 300D.

I would suggest ignoring the Ws, I don't know what the point of is this light is. I have like 4 S models and 2 W, I never use the W becaues the output is too low.

For diffusion which is barely adequate I use a 2x 672S into an umbrella. Barely does anything if you have lots of ambient from the sun but if you can control the light it's workable.

BUT if you are fine with using a harsh light the 672S bare is quite useful.

Definitely 2S, 1W. You can always bounce or diffuse the spot versions but can't do anything to harden up the wide one. My basic interview kit that lives in my van at all times consists of two HR672S, one HR672W, and one LS-1S, all daylight versions, plus stands, softboxes and umbrellas. (Only the big LightStorm has any chance of being usable for anything outdoors, though.)

So ideally, I for a good interview lighting kit that going to last me awhile, go (2) HR672S for fill & hair light and either a LS1s or Cob120 for my key? What reason would choose either the LS1s over Cob120? Thanks!

If you need raw punch, go LS1s.

If you need more shaping control, or the ability to create harder shadows, go for the COB120d.

672s will not last you a while in professional use, they are quite fragile. Try dropping one just a foot or two onto a wood or concrete floor. Think of them as Balsa Wood or Egg Shells. The LS 1S, I have been using three for over a year now, have hauled them to Africa twice and Brazil as well as dozens of local shoots. So far, so good, nothing major has gone wrong with them and a couple of them have been dropped or knocked over. The 672s are fine for a YouTuber home studio where they will just be set up and left alone, they work fine. But they have friction fit plastic battery outlets, and the shell itself is fairly brittle and fragile. They are built to a cheap price point and function well for what they are. But just know that they are not built for pro use. You might want to read DVXer Slavik B's article on the differences. http://www.geardads.com/led-lighting-aputure-amaran-vs-light-storm/

Thanks for the replies and help with this. I'm mainly going to be using these for interview setups. Could the new Aputure TRI 8 be used as a key with (2) 672s or spend the extra money & get (1) LS 1s & 2 672?
