Apps to use for iPhone as external audio recorder?

I'm looking some way of using my iPhone as an external audio recorder. I've got garage band on my phone, but it only allows me to record for about 8 minutes, and no longer. It also any records audio from the external mic on the phone (the mic it uses to pick up your voice when making phone calls).

Is there any way of using an iPhone to record audio for as long as you want (as long as you have enough space on the phone), and to allow you to plug a 3.5mm or 1/8 inch audio cable into the headphone jack to allow you to use a microphone as your source?

If anyone is aware of how to do this, please let me know. I have an iPhone 5 that I use personally, but I have my old iPhone 4 sitting up in my room doing nothing right now. I figured this would be a great way to make use of that old phone.

awesome! Do you know if that app will work if i plug in just any old mic into the phone? i know in their demo it shows them using their own Rode mic, but what if i already have a mic that has a 3.5mm cable to plug into the iphone? will it still work with that mic? or is the Rode lav mic something special where that is the only mic that will work?

BUMP, found out the app is totally bogus. it only records the iPhones internal microphone. the only way to attach a mic is to buy Rode's iXY stereo mic. that is all.

Is there not an app out there for the iPhone that allows me to attach a mic through the headphone jack on the iPhone to record audio? I feel like this should already be out there but I can't find anything like this.

Any other reason for holding onto the iphone 4 when you aren't using it? Not to sound flip, but why not sell it and buy a real audio recorder. You can find either the zoom H1 or Tascam DR 05 for <$100. I've even used a dicataphone type devices (Olympus 802 = $45 refurbished) with pretty good results with an external lav.

Tascam has an app that worked with their iM2. I've never used it with any other mic, though, so I don't know if it'll work the way you want it to, and I wouldn't recommend using this method of recording audio if you are doing anything remotely serious. Fun stuff with kids or voice notes..that's pretty cool.

The Garageband app for Iphone works great with the Smartlav+ and it also works as your main audio source if your recording video. I use it for recording little sections of podcasts or guitar ideas if I'm not around the ministudio. Any mic you plug into an iPhone needs to be a TRRS connection, whether it's an adapter or a straight in cable.
