Features: Approved SSDs

I haven't heard anything official from BMD, but it might be safe to assume that their recomendations would be in line with whatever they recommend for the Hyperdeck Shuttle.
You might want to check those specs.

Again, I'm not sure we can assume this - but it seems like a safe bet to me.
From Blackmagic's site regarding their Hyperdeck Shuttle:

The following SSD's are recommended for uncompressed video capture:

OCZ 240GB Vertex 3
OCZ 480GB Vertex 3
Crucial 256GB C300
Crucial 512GB M4 (firmware 009)
Kingston 64GB SSDNow V+100
Kingston 128GB SSDNow V+100
Samsung SSD 830 512GB

OK, so it would be safe to assume that the new higher read/write drives should suffice, right? I'm just saying because drives like the Crucial C300 are discontinued...

ProTip: Get something with a SandForce controller. They perform better than most, and are fairly priced.

Also, do we know yet if the SATA port is SATAII or SATAIII?

Data offload over USB might be a problem. I'm not ready to buy a new laptop yet, so I'm thinking it might be better to get four 64GB drives than two 128GB drives. That way you could constantly offload while recording.

Wouldn't that be about 8 minutes per drive?

I'd also like to note I have both the 128GB SSDNow V100 and the 128GB SSDNow V+100. Both work in my Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, but only the 128GB SSDNow V+100 is fast enough for uncompressed, but the 128GB SSDNow V100 is plenty fast enough for DNxHD. Since part of the Magic Cam is based off the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 I bet both of these drives will work just like they do on the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.

Ok here's my math:

Transfer rate of USB2 is 480Mbps (max)

480Mbps = 60MBps

60MBps = 3.5GB per minute

At 3.5GBpm it would take roughly 18 minutes to offload a 64GB drive. That's at the max rated speed which we all know ain't gonna happen. According to BMD's site "5 MB/frame in RAW 2.5K fits about 30 minutes of 24p video on a 256 GB solid state disk" so on a 64GB disk you can get 7.5 minutes of recording time. You would need four disks (at least) to continuously record if the above is correct.

And yes, buying a new laptop with USB3 is starting to look like a better option. :D

I own a couple Sandforce SSD's and even though I have had not issues some people I know have. Make sure they have the latest firmware. There was a bad firmware version that caused big issues. I just hope the update actually fixed the issues.

Getting one with Thunderbolt might be a better idea.
