Applying FX to a Solid Layer -- Where does the solid layer go??

When you apply FX like Particular or Videocopilot Optical Flares to a solid layer, where does that solid layer go? Is it completely invisible forever and there's no need to worry about it?

I'm working on something now and feel like it's affecting my work... just trying to get more of a bearing in AE, hate working without knowing what's going on!

Hi Yabyum
This is my 1st post, but I work with AE on a daily basis.
Yes once you apply something like Particular or Optical Flares to a layer the layer becomes the effect, so you don't have to worry about it.
Filters such as these knock out the opacity of a layer and prioritise the effect - so the layer simply becomes a means to an end which is to display the effect. However you also affect the way the layer reacts to the layers below it with it's Transparency settings such as Multiply, Add and Screen

Thanks robster! I'm honored your first post was to answer this :)

If I apply an effect to the solid, it gets knocked out... but what if I do something like Screen on it? Is there any chance that the solid comes BACK? I have a strange feeling that is what's happening... though it's hard to say. Maybe... ah!

Off to research more about Screen, etc. going to get to know these really well.

No, once the effect processes the layer, the final result of the layer is then applied to the layers below it with whatever you choose as the layer mode. I have Particular and Optical Flares and can tell you they both work fine this way :)

No problem :) I know how after effects can be. I love using it, but sometimes getting what I want REALLY makes me have to think about it!
