can i buy the XRAID that is for 1 TB $5999
instead of the 3 TB $10,999.00
and then add my own store bought Western Digital 7200 RPM - 250 GB hard drives to increase it to 3 TB eventually
or are these special hard drives that apple needs to pre install?
from their site it seems like they are all 7200 RPM's 100 ATA Hard Drives they use
thanks

RAID Storage Options
The Apple Drive Module (ADM) is a hot-swappable Ultra ATA/100 hard drive in a special drive carrier module designed for easy server and RAID upgradeability and maintenance. Apple Drive Modules operate at 7200 rpm. Using fourteen 250GB ADMs, Xserve RAID can be configured with over 3.5 terabytes of storage. Each ADM has two LED activity lights - one indicating drive activity and one indicating drive status. All Apple Drive Modules support SMART - Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology - allowing the hardware monitoring tools included with Xserve RAID to monitor the status of each hard drive and report pre-failure warnings before problems occur. Xserve RAID scales in both performance and capacity with the addition of ADM hard drives.
Management of Xserve RAID is provided through Apple RAID Admin, a powerful java-enabled management and monitoring tool. RAID admin allows you to securely setup and monitor Xserve RAID remotely across a local TCP/IP network or over the internet.
RAID levels 0,1,3,5, and 0+1 are provided through dual hardware RAID controllers. Hardware RAID can be used in conjunction with Apple RAID software to achieve very high performance hybrid RAID levels 10, 30, and 50. Xserve RAID requires a minimum of four ADM hard drives.
Ultra ATA/100 hard drives
ATA hard drives combine low cost with excellent performance. Ultra ATA/100 drives run at up to 7,200 revolutions per minute (rpm) and use a protocol that enables faster data transfer to and from the hard drive--up to 100 megabytes of data per second.
