So below are the specs on the new Apple TV. Am I correct in thinking that it still won't play true HD content from something shot/edited say, with the HVX? (since H264 is compressed)? or is it better than the old Apple TV?

Video

Video formats supported:

H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store):

  • • up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 1280x720 @ 24fps, 960x540 @ 30fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • • iTunes Store purchased video, 320x240, 640x480, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
H.264 and protected H.264 (MPEG 4):

  • • up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 720x432 @ 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file format
Audio

  • • Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass through

A bit disappointed, Because it can still only play 5mbps h264 files. This is not good enough for 1080p or pristine 720p.

it still doesn't convince me its a better deal than a PS3 or an XBOX 360- both these machines can play back videos with high double digits mbps encoding, as well as support for 1080p displaying. They are wifi compatible, also (at least for the PS3, which I use as my main entertainment and display machine.)

Seems like they lauched a new model with an internal 160gb. Spec wise is the same machine, except for storage space.

Again, I can upgrade my PS3's hdd to whatever size I need...

However, Apple TV seems like a good deal for HD movie rentals. Apple will give the Blockbusters of this World a run for their money- at least in the HD rental realm.

For SD, sincerely, DVD is still the way to go, for a number of reasons- some of them not so legal, like ripping for viewing in portable devices.

However, we're talking obviously on the US side of the pond. For the rest of the world, the Apple infrastructure still needs to evolve A LOT to distribute content. Only a handful of Online apple stores exist, and they have very limited amount of content...
