Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs. 30"

I'm looking into a Studio Display.

What will be the advantages of using either of the 2 HD models over the 20" regular digital Studio Display. They all seem to have the same aspect. The image quality on all 3 look amazing. Contols are all in the same place. Other than the shell and size - what would be the advantage when it comes to video production to use the HD models over the 20"? If I'm not doing HD production work will the 20" be ok to use? Will I be better off in the long run, as HD becomes more mainstream, to invest in a Studio Display HD?

My current set-up is a 17" Studio Display, Dual 867, Pro Sony PVM-14L2 for monitoring and FCP HD for editing. I'd like to upgrade the Studio Display to the 20" for more desktop space BUT if saving up another $500 for one of the HD monitors is something I should consider, why should I consider it?

What kind of bonus, extra production value, etc. can I get out of investing in one of these HD monitors?

Thanks for suggestions.

It's my understanding (and I could be way off base but am trying to chime in) that unless you shot HD then HD it will not be.

Is that correct?

Makes sense to me. I shoot on a DVX and don't plan on getting the SONY HD camera. I mean unless FCP HD magically transforms SD signals to HD, why get a HD monitoring system? Can I even hook-up a HD cable or DVD (whatever) signal to the Studio Display HD? To my understanding, the HD models still have the same connections as the 20" model. Am I wrong here?

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

I have a 20" and am very happy with it. I've heard of some issues with the 23's. So you may want to go small or huge, but not middle.

Obviously, if you can afford the 30, the workspace it gives you is just incredible. It would make moving around in the program way easier. Other than "FREAKIN' HHUUGGEE".... ah, nothin' special.

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

I have the 23" and so does my partner, no issues at all - they're great!! I felt the 23" was a good compromise between size and cost. I also have a 20" cinema display sitting next to it and use a dual monitor set up. The difference between the two is substantial.

What are the differences? Size is obvious. Does anyone care to comment, especially those who are lucky enough to have 20" and 23"/30" side-by-side, about quality, use, better production, etc.?

Matt and Jared, do you both have CRT production monitors?

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

You can rule out the 30", cause it needs a G5 to run it. I personally think that the 20" is the best cause its the cheapest, but the 23" is really good. If you can, get to an apple store to check them out side by side.

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

23 inch looks a lot bigger than the 20 inch when you see them side to side. however, with the edu discount, the 20 inch price really is great. I'll probably end up getting the 20 inch, its really big enough to where you can do your work comfortably (imo)

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

I have the 23 and love it. Go to the Apple dealer and check out the difference. The size difference is significant.  Yes, there were some issues with the 23 have a pink/magenta hue, but from what I understand, that was with the first batch. Mine is beautiful.  I bought mine at the same time I bought a G5 dual processor, with the 3 year Mac AppleCare warranty. According to the Mac guy I bought it from, the only way to get the 3 year Applecare is to buy the monitor at the same time as the computer.  And he gave me a deal on the warranty. As far as the HD goes, who knows. Hopefully I'll have the monitor long enough to put HD to use, even if I'm on a G7 by then. Since I spend all my money on cameras and computers, its also a great system to watch DVD movies on. They look INCREDIBLE.

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

Thanks for all the responses. Very helpful. I'll most likely get the 20" as 3 more inches doesn't justify the $500. Although it is HD, I really don't see any reason to go HD. Most end users can't view that kind of signal and the DVX isn't an HD camera. There weren't any responses to convince me otherwise. Mostly responses as to size and not really anything about image quality. So I assume the images look the same.

thanks again

It is very sharp and has like 12 ms response time for picture. 600 contrast or something. 4 usb 2 ports

and at $750, you cant go wrong.[/quote]

That's tempting. For $750 you can hook other things to it. At that price I can almost afford 2! Anyone else care to comment on the quality of these DELL wide-aspect LCDs? I'm gonna take a trip to Compusa to check it out. Soarprod: where did you purchase your LCD?

Only thing I don't like about it is that seems to have the build of the old Apple Studio Displays, which I didn't care for. Flimsy. Almost like it could break. I'll have to see one in person and mess with it.

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

Blacklink offers a break out box that let you use your apple HD display as a preview monitor for HD post production work. It's expensive, but still much cheaper than CRT HD broadcast monitors. If you don't plan on doing true HD (as DVCPRO100) work anytime soon, Don't bother with it. I have a 17-inch and I already think it rules!

from what I hear, they're the exact same panel used for the apple cinema displays, so they're excellent. I havent seen on in person though

Looking for reviews on the Dell LCD and found these interesting reviews:

http://forums.mikhailtech.com/showthread.php?t=4842

Mentioned PROS and CONS of the Dell 2005FPW 20” LCD
(NOTE: That most complaints for this LCD is about minor backlight bleeding, which might not be a big deal while editing but if you are doing any color critical Photoshop work, this might be a drawback.)

Pros

+20” widescreen for movies and widescreen-enabled games.
+20” vertical position for web browsing or typing with long documents.
+Price significantly lower than any competition.
+Small footprint saves lots of space.
+Plethora of inputs and USB hub good for many applications.
+Bright colors and sharp details with strong albeit not absolute blacks.

Cons

-Backlight bleeding.
-Slightly weak support for vertical or horizontal positions.
-Dead pixels (although these are an inherent risk when purchasing an LCD).

Now checking out that BENQ LCD and the specs look nice. But $$

Thanks for the input

Re: Apple Studio Display 20" vs. 23" vs.

I bought my 2005 FPW 20" Dell from guess who? DELL! ;D I got in on a 4 for the price of 3 deal a few mo. ago and mine was $600 - $675 shipped and tax.

It is a freaken sweet monitor - no dead pixels on any of the 4 we got. The claimed black issue I only see when the windows xp logo is displayed in startup - once you get into windows, I have never experieced it.

I do photoshop all the time and I think it looks pretty accurate as far as LCDs go in the first place.

To me, the display is close/similar to the quality of the sony xbrite screens. Not quite there but very crisp - black level isnt what a xbrite is.

The build quality of the monitor is excellent!

BTW, in addition to film production, I have done computer consulting professionally for over 10 years. I place monitors all the time for many clients and businesses. This is one of the best I have seen.

See if you can get a 20-25% discount off ebay for dell and really get a deal on the monitor.

Been reading many good things about this LCD. Hard to find more reviews as it's a new monitor but existing reviews from the model it replaces kinda reinforce it. I like that you can do vertical too. Don't know if I'll be able to utilize that in MacOS. I keep hearing about the rebate offer and was wondering where to find it. Ebay? What do you mean "get the discount off ebay" ??

Thanks for the reply.

Dell has promotional codes and things like when you buy a machine, they give you 20% off the next machine purchase. People on ebay sell those codes for cheep.
