Apple release 8-Core Mac Pro!

I guess final cut extreme seems more possible, 8mb cache x2, i mean, thats wrong, the upgrade price to the quads is harsh too!

They most be crazy! That is overpriced like crazy! Come on apple what are you doing! Well I guess I will buy a Two 2.00GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” model and buy the Quad core processors from newegg.com or something. As soon as somebody else tries it and it works:)

Ya, that is my one question that I dont want to risk answering, I know on my g5, the cpus were built in, not upgradable, but the xeons look to be removable which makes me hope that some day, maybe Sonic will provide cpus upgrades, so my machine will have more worth in the long run, making the money I spent more justifiable

Unfortunately since I cannot do production for a normal day job, during the workweek I support 45 workstations and 7 servers. My CEO decided a year ago we would no longer order from the local computer companies so we started building our own desktops and servers. My wholesale price on the 3.0 processor is right at 1400 bucks each, with no processors in stock at the warehouse. A normal 2.66 dual core xeon costs right at 700-750 or so depending on how many I order...so Im not quite sure I would say apple is out of line on their pricing on this one. The pricing of these are just extremely high! I am just happy that they are offering this option.

I was holding off ordering a new powermac until the 8-core was released, thinking they were going to upgrade the whole line. But since it's only for the $4000 uber-model, I think I'll just get the quad 2.66, which is probably faster than I need anyway. I'm suprised they didn't wait til NAB, though.

Wow, talk about premature! Just one week left and then it's NAB.

Guess that'll make the secret event before NAB even bigger.

Apple has told me in two different Trainer certification classes over the past year that there is no FCP Extreme. The reasoning I was given is that a high end Mac with an AJA card can now do 2k. A desktop doing 4k is just around the corner. There's no reason why AJA and BlackMagic can't be upgraded for the new OctaCore to do 4k.

Just information I was given, just putting it out there FYI.

I agree that there is no need for a higher end FCP system since the computers are just so powerful as you said.

I also am expecting a Widescreen Touch iPod with the Internet (WiFi) capabilities. Basically a iPhone without the Phone part.

Apple can claim what they want but they can't ignore the physics.

A single 4K frame is approximately 40MBs string 24 of those together and you have a data rate that not even an Onyx2 [if you could still get them] could handle.

All of this talk about 4K is entertaining but I fail to see the point of it. Probably more than 90% of production is SD, a good percentage of the HD that is done is done badly and now everyone wants to jump to 4K.

Hmmm

Yes but 4k compressed isn't that big is it now. I think folks just want to future proof there work. Yes it is over kill but so are those sports cars I see on the Los Angeles freeways. I am sure this is someone out there pondering 8k so it is what it is.

We went through this same behavior in the digital film industry, every one wanted to work in 4K until they found out how expensive it was and then they wanted 2K in real time until they figured out there wasn't really anything they could do with a couple of hundred gigabytes of data that would be generated daily.

We would all be so much better off if all of these developers and manufactures would quite marketing futures and just gave us the tools we needed to do HD right. None of this highly compressed 8 bit crap. If we could edit HD efficiently in all its 10 bit glory we would be future proofed for the next 50 years.

Besides is highly compressed 4K really 4K?

Yes!:) I know what you are saying buddy some folks just like to stay on the bleeding edge and they bleed for there decisions. I am happy with 1080p I don't even need 2K I have seen plenty of movies on the pocket theater screens in Los Angeles that were shot 1080p HD. Grindhouse,Crank,Superman all looked great to me. You have to have 20/20 vision and sit in the neck brace seats to see a difference.
