Apple & Ram ?

Hi guys i am waiting for HVX200 to come in PAL land & also waiting for Apple's new Intel desktop computers (any idea what the next generation of G5 will be called?) hopefully both will arrive in march if i am lucky ;) Yes i am switching after i read about Jarred & Barry moving over :)

My question is that looking at Apple's website i am quite surprised by the prices for Memory aka RAM, what i am wondering is that if i get the standard Mac can i upgrade it my self with more RAM as the prices for RAM are coming down each day... i can pick up a good brand 1GB stick for 60-90 GBP. anyone has any experiences with upgrading Mac memory? are there any issues i have to be aware of? If its do able i can RAM it upto 16GB for less than 2k which is way cheaper than getting it from Apple at 7290 GBP for 16GB RAM alone... i mean i can buy another HVX & sum sweet accessories for the difference... aint it crazy?

How much RAM would i need to run Final Cut to edit HD smoothly? (DVC PRO HD & HDV) I know the more the better but how much RAM would you recomend for a smooth workflow?

thanks

You absolutely under no circumstances should buy RAM from Apple. They gouge you. It's very easy to install 3rd party RAM in Macs, so long as you look up and match the specs precisely.

As for editing, I don't think you need a tremendous amount really. I've done editing of brief 720p segments in DVCPRO HD with only 1.5GB, and it was no problem. If you have the money, I'd say go for 4GB or so and spend the rest elsewhere.

This is what i found on Apple's website

"Note: Power Mac G5 systems use 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200). You should always purchase RAM that has been tested and approved for your system. If you don't purchase memory directly from Apple, be sure to check with the third-party manufacturer to verify compatibility before purchase."

thanks dougspice it makes much sense to buy third party RAM i'l go with 4GB to start with because as you just said its easy to install so i can add as i need.

Another question, does having more RAM help with realtime performance in Final Cut?
