Could I run FCP HD or FCP HD Express on a Powerbook G4 17-inch w/ 1.5ghz? Or should I wait until they come out w/ the Powerbook G5? I would like to do spots/ short film editing on the machine. Im in college so I guess I could use the portability. Any advice would help. Thanks.

Re: Apple Powerbook G4 need help!!

Yep.
You can run the entire production suite on a 17" PB. Motion won't have all the real-time capabilities on a G4, but it will still run. Everything else should run smooth as glass.

Re: Apple Powerbook G4 need help!!

Sure, you should consider it.
It comes down to what your needs are. If portability is a priority, you'll want to go with the PB.
You might want to think about going with a PowerMac G5 and getting a less powerful notebook to supplement it. You could always offline edit on the notebook and do your onlining on the G5. Best of both worlds.

I have a 15" PowerBook Aluminum G4 1.25Gz that I've had for a little over a year, and a G5 PowerPC dual 2Gz. I love them both, the G5 is great for heavy duty work, but it sure sucks as a laptop. The PowerBook is sooooo nice. Nothing like working with your feet up on the couch. The PowerBook runs everything in the Production Suite great, except Motion, which like MoFo said, is a little slow. By the way Mo, great screen name! Anyway, try the 17" PowerBook, you'll LOVE it, guaranteed!

Thanks, I think ill go for the 17'powerbook. That way i can go to starbucks and the school library and pick up some chicks. :) I will mostly use it for little editing, and school work. thanks.

Re: Apple Powerbook G4 need help!!

You will love it, for sure.
If you can, upgrade to the 5400 hard drive. It's a custom build, so you'll have to do it online.

Re: Apple Powerbook G4 need help!!

I hear Apple is having a really hard time cooling the G5 sufficiently to work in a PowerBook so the G4 is probably a safe buy right now. Could be a long while before the G5 comes out.

Re: Apple Powerbook G4 need help!!

an iBook is cheaper and still quite capable. Plus you could take the extra dough and start saving up for a dual G5 to give you a remote and home editing solution.
