I'm reading various forums and these last days (not on this forum, of course) , I saw too many sentences like :
"I hate DRM but I hate France too",
"I love apple and I hate those French bastards"
"Give me back my freedom fries"
"I don't drink wine but they really piss me off"
"Where's my B'52, I need to go to Paris"
etc...
(You can just take regular air companies to come here but from may to september, this is not a good idea. Too many people especially if you hope to be the only US guy in the metro)
What is very surprising is that most of this people are not informed and seemed not interested to be.
So, I decided to write this little text to explain what was exactly the purpose of this law.
Nota : I'm not pro or con this law.
So this law is consumer-oriented and mainly say :
a°) If you buy a digital content, whatever it is, you have the right to play/display it on the hardware of your choice. So, this law wants to enhance interoperability between digital content providers.
If you buy an song with itunes music store, you must be able to play it on another player than an ipod.
b°)DRM are legal and you can't remove them (if you can !!)
So this is all this law is saying (mainly)
You can be pro or con, of course but I don't think you have to hate somebody for that.
Is really Apple concerned ? No, because in most Euro countries, the currency exchange rate is :
1 dollar = 1 euro.
The result : Ipod's familly is much more expensive than others brands.
So, why all this mess ?
And it could be even possible that Apple will have a bigger market share here if people can buy songs from others music store (french artists/bands are not very present on iTunes)
To conclude :
My sister bought an ipod one year ago and the ipod crushed during she was moving to his new appartment last week. She bought several song on iTunes music store and now she can't use it on another player.
But she knew she was an "Apple's 'hostage'", so she can't complain.
Et, voilà !
