Apple moves to Intel Chips!?

Exactly. In this day and age....specs mean nothing.

We are DEFINITELY in for a treat this holiday season and next year as well. The Gamer inside me CAN'T WAIT!!

haha translation: "Ya, we bought some macs, they're better than anything we have now... so what? They're ok, I mean we have to use them, we'll probably get something better later, of course if there was something better we'd have used it now though... but... um..... ya.... BILL GATES RULES!!!"

We'll know for sure on Monday at the WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference). It seems very *unlikely* but it could turn out to be a hoax initiated by Apple to combat the leaks they've had in previous months (ala Mac Mini, and Ipod Shuffle).

Monday can't come soon enough for me!! :)

The speed concerns with this switch don't interest me, but the price does. If it happens it will be interesting to see if the Macs drop in price. I'm not sure how much of the price premium (Yes, yes I know that software matters too) was due to the PPC and the Mobo etc required for it, but if it's a significant amount, maybe we'll see cheaper Macs. While this is good for me, I think it will also psychologically get people thinking that they computers are not competitively priced, whereas, even if you think that Mac's are worth the extra (Works out of the box, bundled software, good OS etc) a lot of consumers don't.

I'd be so unhappy as a mac user if Apple decided to switch to intel chips.

For christs sake, I have already endured the switch from Motorola 680x0 processors to the PowerPC.. then the OS9 -> OSX switch... I have had enough with huge shifts..

but this would also destroy the very reason I am mac user, or at least one of them. Apple would lose one more thing that differentiates themselves from the competition.

There would be no more reviews that could say "Well apple may appear slower, but since they use a different processor you can't really compare them equally".. .so apple would have to start making some seriously fast monster computers.. (not that they don't already.. but you get what I mean..)

i understand that going with intel might provide some needed speed ups.. but damn... there are many many people that feel the same way as I do... using a mac is lifestyle choice in many respects...

I can't see a descision like this going well at all with apple's hardcore fan base.. and I am not talking about the mac zealots.. i am talking about the people that kept apple a float during the "dark times" when they were on the brink of death.

if that is true... one part of Apple can RIP

Faster speeds, better processing? Why wouldn't that make apple users happy? Or maybe its just because you associate Intel with Windows and that is hard to swallow. I for one welcome it and I am huge fan of Mac. Wouldn't think of using a PC at this point.

Apple is a business. Ironically the mac zealots are a very small ziche market. If Apple makes this switch they may actually have a shot at stealing more of the market away from Microsoft. I hope it happens.

LOKI I do not mean this as harsh as it comes across and as always, I generalize and am not proclaiming any sort of gospel. IN other words; I loove you man.

I have to say that for me, using a PC is not a lifestyle choice. I am not emotionally attached to the computer. It is merely a machine; a tool.

Comments like the one above are what makes MAC users come across as pretentious and cavalier. MAC users tend to be so caught up in the perceived glamour of using a MAC; which is exactly what MAC wants; selling a machine and making it as sexy as they can and MAC users fall into this microcosm. It is almost borderline cultish. I am surprised MAC users do not wear jump suits and Nikes and await the comet to pass by earth.

Why is choosing a MAC a lifestyle choice? It's a computer. I suspect most MAC (and even more PC users) users have no idea what it means for Apple to move to INTEL or any other internal hardware segment.

The MAC clique is bizarre to me. Almost a love affair with a machine that can do nothing and anything a PC can do and when they make utterances such as the one above or any soundbite that attempts to place MAC (come now, really themself) on a higher plane it comes across not only wearisome but narcissistically drivelish.

I'm here to make friends. :undecided

I'm a Mac user and I really don't care what chip is in the computer as long as the chips are fast and keep getting faster at quick rate.

Exactly how it should be. I use a PC and if I wake up and they say we're doing X, Y or Z as MAC does then so be it. As long as it works for what I need it to.

while i don't understand all the tec implications of this platform change, i wonder if apple is aiming to become less of a hardware company (ie you have to buy their expensive machines) and more of a software company (ie the os works on dell, compaq, and gateway machines) to launch a more competative battle with microsoft.

anyone more computer savy than me know if that is a possibility?

John-
I agree with you that Mac users can sometimes be a little dramatic about their choice of computers, but speaking for myself, at least I think it has a lot to do with the operating system. Assuming Apple makes a switch to Intel without any bump in the OS switchover then I woulnd't really care. For me though Mac OS X is a sleek, easy to use system that allows me to be as simple or advanced as I want. (ooh, I'm sounding a lot like a Mac commercial, darn ;) ) That's not to say I have anything against PCs. To come back to the original topic, as long as Apple makes the front end transition smooth I don't think the engine inside makes any difference.
Peace,

-Harry

Agreed Harry. And I hear this alot from MAC users; what makes them so 'user friendly' as opposed to the PC?

I am asking as I do not know.

When expressed in those terms, even I don't have a good answer. Truth is, I really have no idea why I like this computer so much. I can't put my finger on what makes it "easy to use" exactly. I'd say I've had fewer problems with this machine than I did with my PC, but to be fair, that PC was an old, old computer when it was finally replaced. I can only say my brain just "clicks" with this Mac and using it is simple. I used PC's for some ten years before I bought a Mac. Initially there was some chic associated with having one, but really I don't feel I'm involved with that crowd so much.. The iApps are pretty handy along with Sherlock, but even Sherlock is based on some freeware program. Apple just has a way of building integrated systems using the best of materials and software to make an immaculate and stable machine. Maybe that's it, I dunno. Head over to an Apple Store and play with one.. that's what I did.
