Apple moves to Intel Chips!?

HOLY ****!! I've found at least 10 reliable sources confirming this. Looks to be true. Or Apple may be trying to lite a fire under IBM's ASS!!

IBM is going to be busy making chips for Xbox 360, Sony PS3, and Nintendo Revolution. Plus, Apple is unhappy that their PowerPC chips run so hot--just think, there's no Powerbook G5, something that would be a hot seller. I just wish they would have gone with AMD...

Monday should reveal the truth. I think this *could* be good for Apple in the long run....but it most definitely will affect sales NOW!! Sales that are already slumping due to less than expected G5 speeds. Mac Mini and Ipod and really keeping Apple afloat lately. Go Apple....Go Intel!!

Pretty interesting. Not that much will differentiate the guts of a PC and Apple if this article is true.

Hey Res!

I'm not sure if I'd agree with either statement, however IBM doesn't design or make either chipset. Motorola-spinoff Freescale makes the G4 processors as used in Mac Mini and Powerbook; iBook. Funny, huh?

Bet Apple is serious this time around. There will probably be Intel Inside Mac's within two years for the next generation of computers. Thinksecret.com seems to be taking the safe route, though. Nick's article is ambiguous at best and unconclusive at worst.

No offense man....but check the sales figures. PowerMac sales SUCK. They have been on a steady decline since Apple missed the 3.0Ghz mark a year ago. Mac Mini and Ipod are blowing the doors off just about everything Apple has to offer. I'll be happy to see Mac goto Intel. It will most likely give them more than a 2% market share within a few years.....although this will stall sales for awhile until the transition is made. My 2 for 2 special with coupon!!

Hope so. Maybe they'll have a fighting chance to *FINALLY* break into M$'s market share. It can only help things, I doubt it could make them any worse.

missing the 3 Ghz mark, if that's the reason for Apple's decline, is really lame. PowerPC clock speeds can't be compared to Intel clock speeds, due to Apple's hardware and software infrastructure. But unfortunately, perception is reality, and the consumer believes clock speed is king. Oh well. We'll all have multi-core processors within a couple of years anyway. Based on Apple's recent history, this must be the best way to go--Steve Jobs doesn't mess around...

Missing the 3gig mark isn't neccessarily the *REASON* of the alleged "switching to Intel" report.....but IBM has repeatedly made Steve Jobs and Apple look like a complete ASS due to their inability to provide a *Processor Roadmap* or hit any of their target speeds in a timely fashion. PPC has hit a brick wall. Period. IBM had better shape up and get on the ball with 3Ghz or Dual Core processors......or it's off to Intel they go.

And also to be noted......the Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo Revolutions PPC multicore chips don't even exist yet....only on paper. The Xbox 360 games at NAB were demoed on G5 Powermacs. IBM *expects* to have the 3.2 Ghz chips done by the end of the year for the Xbox.

Just thought that was an interesting bit of info. Typical marketing.....#'s, #'s, and more #'s.....selling products that don't yet exist......just your typical Boiler Room salesmanship!!

Either Way.....Mac OSX will still be what it is.....a great operating system. Most people will never notice the chips inside.

Res, the Xbox 360 chips do exist, they'll be in stores in november. and the new consoles will BLOW AWAY 90% of gaming PCs out there, long before the others! and for the first time in a long time, consoles will rule gaming.

OS X is a great os. perhaps apple plans on getting into the software business? SJ already said osx would run on an intel machine...I'd love to run OS X on my AMD 64 FX-51.

Frizzle Fry. I don't mean to dishearten you, but the 360 chips do not exist. They are still in production and are *estimated* to be ready in November according to IBM. This is not fiction. This is FACT. That is why ALL of M$'s 360 stuff was demoed on PowerMac G5's at E3. Don't believe me? Look it up for yourself on any Game Site or Google / Google News.

I'm sure IBM will hit their mark with the 3.2Ghz multicores. M$ is planning on a big holiday season so I'm sure they'd be tried, tested, and manufacted by then.

And just remember. All the *SPECS* are tenative and subject to change if there are any unforseen problems in the manufacturing process. Cheers!!

The PS3 chips exist too. Business 2.0 ran an article on the cell processor. In it, there is an interview with one of the engineers who states that several months ago, they got the thing made, and it ran Linux on the first try.

As for dual-core processors for the desktop computer, they are already here.

In regard to PPC vs. the x86 architecture, I found this article interesting: http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2436

Thanx for the update.

I found the article here detailing the Cell Demo running Linux on an IBM Blade Server:

http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20050525/105050/

But the fact remains that Xbox 360's chips are not yet complete. Unless M$ is just holding out on us. Although I'm sure they would have *liked* to have their machine finished at E3 instead of running their software on PowerMacs. Obviously, there's still some work to be done.

ugh. res, let's hope there's no "unforeseen problems." No, I'm not disheartened; thanks for correcting me! But like you said, I trust MS to deliver on time this time...

as far as specs, it's moot. the specs for all the systems are so close, it's going to be a matter of how the game developers make use of the hardware, something that MS focused heavily on while designing the 360.

we're all in for a treat!
