Apple Motion compared to Adobe After Effects 6

Okay I used after effects professionally a while ago maybe 4 years ago. Anyway After Effects could do everything I needed but it was amazingly slow. What I am wondering is Motion 3 with its updates close in function to After Effects 6? I know we are many version past 6 but some folks might never take advantage of some of the updates.

This is the best example I have of stuff I would like to do in Motion 3 http://videocopilot.net/tutorials.html

If you are an after effects user you have to check this out. I know Motion 3 isn't even out yet but from what you fine folks have gathered is it possible to pull off those effects in those tutorials? Thanks

I've never used Motion, but those are some pretty bitchin tutorials!

I use Motion daily. It's awesome as hell and Motion 3 will definitely leave a few ripples in the waters IMO.

But you can't replace After Effects. It really is the best and I can't wait to use it more.

Having both in the arsenal is going to be freaking fantastic. And YES, you will be able to pull that off in motion 3, and I'd like to think with more EASE than After Effects to be honest.

Motion's interface is extremely user friendly. I hope to all that they've fixed the layers issue. You can't collapse layers enough for my tastes. Using the program really calls for a screen with mass amounts of real-estate.

Hence my saving for another 22" or 24" Gateway.

Hello Kholi I hoped you would stop by as you seemed to be just as excited about Motion 3 as I was. I also use Motion quite frequently and that is why I was hoping to be great at one instead of being average at both. All I need to be able to do is mainly what was done in those videocopilot tutorials. I am sure there will be many plugins that come out for motion now that it is 1 solid Motion Graphics and Compositing app. I am wondering if the guys over at dvgarage.com will come out with a new version of Conduit that will take advantage of the new 3d features in Motion 3. That would make it a nodal based compositor with 3D particles.

Question FCP has sequences and after effects has comps does motion have something similiar?
I want to use Motion 3 as a finishing program for music videos and short movies as a hobby nothing really out of this world.

Motion is already integrated with Final Cut Studio, I suspect the integration will be amped with Motion 3 considering the demo on the website. It's REALLY going to be great.

And you and I both know they do revisions as well, so when people start giving feedback we can expect another Motion improvement later on. I love Final Cut sooo much.

The DVgarage guys and everyone else who's been following motion should be kicking out some REALLY good treats for us, dude.

With the new 3D camera system, all of those tutorials are gonna be a piece of freaking cake. Like, you just have no idea how easy Motion is in comparison to After Effects as far as interface goes. You can put together things a lot faster than in After Effects, or maybe that's just me. And with Motion 3 basically mimicking After Effects, sheesh.

Trust me Kholi I know what you are saying buddy! I was just making sure I wasn't over looking anything important. The one important feature I overlooked was expressions in after effects, now I am not saying I used them so hopefully by the time the next revision comes out that will be added plus some type of comp/sequence system. I am in no way complaining because my top 3 feature requests have been checked off the list.

I think I will probably get certified in Motion 3 now that it will probably be in demand much more.

Well, I can't say that it'll be in Demand much more. a FINAL CUT COLORist will be, though. And that's something to really look into.Which I am.

I actually plan to get Certified in Final Cut and Color asap. Motion 3 will be something that you can use to get more moneez from independent clients.

I don't think that Motion will ever add expressions like After Effects, simply because of the complexities in that feature set. It seems like the Motion Mantra is to keep things very simple. Then again, who knows!

Well, i will tell you biys this much, my next computer will be an Intel mac so i can cut on FCP Studio. I want "Color" REAL bad.

As I've stated over-n-over (here it goes again): Final Cut Studio is pretty much THE reason to buy a Mac. I can't really think of anything else OS X wise that makes it worth the extra money.

i agree kholi. I give apple credit for making the integration rock that hard. you can flip a peice of footage from , FCP, to ?Motion, to Color, to FCP agian with the click of a button, from within the app. its sweet as hell.

Omg I know. And it really is a button click, man. I mean I'm all for working hard, going through the motions. But, Apple really DOES make things a lot easier. Allows you to work faster, get more work done.

I'm truly amazed at Final Cut Studio 2's release and I'm ecstatic to get my hands on a copy asap.

Just a little bit on Color that I read recently over at Stu's blog:

Stu Maschwitz said:
Press play. Color, when doing the kind of stuff that makes it worth using, is not real-time. Which, of course, is totally OK—but what's not OK is that Color doesn't render any sort of interactive preview that you can view in the context of a session. To see your work play back smoothly, you must batch render and view the results in Final Cut!

If you want to read the whole thing, it's right here. I'm sure it's still worth checking out, but this seems a bit annoying to me.

Funny. There's a thread here that I said the exact same thing in.

You can't just be a colorist; most people don't even understand color theory. So there's no reason for others to worry about wanna-be colorists at all.

Yeah you are right I will look into getting Color certified also, I was thinking of using motion as a finishing program like Stu recommends using After Effects.
I guess I will be going FCP to Motion to Color.
I wonder if motion projects will open in Color that would be great?

Anyway I am sure the new Shake will be a super app that does all of these in one interface plus scripting.

Also, there is real-time previewing. It's just optimized the opposite way. Apparently he didn't know that.

Hmmm...well, Stu is pretty knowledgable and he used it at NAB, so I'm not sure about the video. I remember when Apple marketed Motion as real-time, yet in the real-world it was far from that. I think that was Stu's point, in the real-world it's not quite realtime.

I don't know...maybe he can chime in, he posts on here from time to time. Either way, I guess we'll all know when we get our hands on it.

More than likely it's not, and I agree. Though that's just updates. Whenever it comes out that'll help.

Gotta say, though, the GPU in Mac pro's suck all day long. Can't believe they're so old.
