My sons school is selling 5 year old apple imacs G3 for $20.00 I am going to buy 2 for him I was just wondering if they can be updated? (bigger hard drives , mare ram stuff like that )
Any suggestions

YES, most likely the HD and Ram can be updated. Possibly the video card & processor too. Just depends on what exact *model* you get. ~reservoir~

Ok ya.. what resevoir said is mostly false and wrong..

the only thing that can be upgraded on an old iMac G3 is the Ram..

the Hard drive your going to have a harder time,. I know it can be done, I am just not sure of the size of the HD's.. like actual physical drive size..

Processor ... not upgradeable
Video not upgradable either.

for $20.00.. hell I'd buy em too.. but don't delude yourself with thoughts on upgrading those machines.

They were built for people that don't upgrade their computers.

It doesn't matter what iMac model you have, the video card has never been upgradeable with any of the models over the years.

The original iMac had a "special" slot referred to as the "mezzanine" slot ... a company once created a Voodoo2 grfx card to fit in there... but other than that.. no dice..

enjoy those new machines, definately look into upgrading the RAM... and check about the HD's as well...

cheers

thanks Ya they are for my 6 year old and for my 2 year old they will love them and I will install some kids games on them.

Here's info on upgrades. http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/slot-up.html

they are a pain to upgrade though, hard to open and mount stuff.... most educational stuff may be in bad shape...be sure it works!!! ie, the motherboard, video screen etc. If it does you may be lucky and not need to do major upgrades...

You can always ad an external firewire hard drive for $100-$200. Then you can always use it on other systems later. I wouldn't plan on doing much video editing, but its a hell of a computer for kids games for 20 bucks.

Pump those iMac up with RAM and be done with it. They'll be able to run OS X and your children will be able to do all kinds of things with 'em. I'm sure your six-year-old won't mind if it's a little sluggish now and then. Biggest problem I've seen with those G3 iMacs is the CRT. When that goes, the game is over.

For $20, you could get a couple and run a wireless broadband connection in your house. Then you've got Internet appliances or multimedia viewers or digital jukeboxes -- whatever. Yeah, for $20 you can't go wrong, unless the machines are already f'ed. Make sure you turn it on and look at the display before you take it home. When those CRTs get funky, they're unviewable over long periods.
