Apple cinema 23" display: alternative?

I've just emerged from a 2 week struggle with Apple and 3 of their flawed 23" cinema displays... After much research I have realized that most of them are flawed (magenta cast on the left side, yellow cast on the right, dim patches around the edges.) It is the lamps they use in the 23" only (the 20" and 30" are beautiful edge to edge) however I don't got the cash for the 30" and the 20" ain't big enough... I have read about the eizos, they have about 75 different models, but many sites report they're great for photoshop/design, but quite awful for video (ghosting and halos etc...) Without breaking the bank, does anyone have experience with a similarly sized/priced flat panel monitor for video? Any suggestions appreciated.

A lot of folks here are pleased with the Dell 24" displays. You can sometimes pick them up for around $800 with the right coupon code.

Are these Dells generally considered as high quality video editing monitors by those "in the biz?"

Depends on what you mean by "in the biz" several of the Moderators here use them and enjoy them. I've thought about picking one up the next time there is a code to bring the price back down to $800.

Another option would be to get the last generation of 23" appl LCD's. They still work great, and you can pick one up for "cheap" at places like http://www.smalldog.com or http://www.powermax.com for $750 - $950.

My 23" ACD display is flawless minus one stuck red pixel; I love it. I would like another one - btw its the ACD connector 23" and everyone knows the later generation DVI's have major issues.

And as far as dell's go.. I've seen the 24" dell. The colors seem a bit more "metallic" and a little washed out sometimes. If I'm not mistaken their probably just rebranded Viewsonic LCD's and I believe the viewsonic LCD's are rebranded sony lcd's? I might be talking out of my ass here, however.

Im running dual cinema 20s. About the same price as one 23, and tons more real estate.

Whether you are or not, it would not surprise me if you were correct.

I've got a 24" Dell, and it rocks. I believe it has similar resolution specs as the 23" Apple display. Now I have to earn some more dough to buy another one. The thought of two of these bad boys at my editing station makes me feel all warm inside.

redcap: is there a way to order a non-dvi model? i'm confused as to what you mean, i burned through 3 dvi input 23" apples, and they were all total crap.

I take it you're refering to the ltaest generation of LCD screens. If not, you've got some bad luck- I've never heard of that problem occuring with the older units ...

I bought a Dell 20" widescreen earlier this year when it was on sale for around $450 and have been very pleased with it.
The 24" are getting raves over at macintouch - there's actually a great discussion of displays over there that you may want to check out.

I don't need another LCD, but I have to restrain myself every time the Dells go on sale again...

Microcenter, here in Duluth , Georgia had a 32" LCD monitor for $899. I have two friends who bought them to edit with HD and FCP, and they love them.
I think they are the "Wintel" monitors.

Isn't it true that if you want the best color is to stick with a CRT based monitor? I assume that the advantage of the LCD is desk space and power consumption. What am I leaving out?

I currently use 2 Dell 24" monitors and have purchsed 3 more for other systems. Here's my notes on them:

1-the colours are washed out at the 1.8 gamma setting so i have changed them to their PC native gamme of 2.2 and the colours are much more vibrant.

2-The DVI and VGA input are very nice although you may have to tinker with the auto-adjust when in VGA Mode.

3-Although a nice feature, the Component, Composite and Serial inputs are totally useless. The scaling quality of these inputs are horrible so if you're planning on using those inputs without an external scaler I would look elsewhere.

4-If you have an SDI card you can use various products to convert SDI to DVI with these monitors like you would with the Apple 23's. I do not have one so I can't comment on their colour quality and even if I did, I'm colour blind so I wouldn't say anything anyways. I do know when a monitor looks desaturated though (point 1)

5-Text is much easier to read on the 24's then on the 23's by Apple or HP.

Personally, I love them.
