Apple announces 8 core Xeon Mac

Nice machine.... I wonder if a revamp in the line is coming soon. They really just added this on to the top of the existing machines.

I was surprised to see no Blu/HD dvd burner or Graphic Card upgrade.

I'm sure the pro line is next in line for a redesign. They've done the portables, and this design has been going since the first G5 years ago.

No Graphic card update because the platform lags on support. We're already on 8800GTS in Windows OS land, and Radeon's reported to come in soon with their nVidia response.

Like I said-- Love the OS, dislike the hardware.

great. but is tere anysoftware out there tht can utilize this hardware or is it just like saying "my dog is part wolf", cool sounding but useless...

sorry to sound jaded, really?

WELL, if the processors were real quads, sure. But they aren't so it IS pretty much useless at the moment to invest in 8 core macs.

What do you mean... I haven't been up on the MACs much lately...

On a different note how warm is it in Westminster... used to live in HB... across from the mall but still HB...

It turned cold today... they claim out here its always cold Easter week... need to get back into training... or get some long johns... :)

I actually do not live in Westminster anymore. LoL. I live in Los Angeles, near the Santa monica airport. Westminster was a bit warmer than Irvine, when I lived there. I actually enjoyed the slightly warmer climate.

On topic, though: It doesn't really have to do with MACS as opposed to processors. The QX6700 (Intel Core 2 Quad processor) Is just two native Core 2 Duo's packed into one piece.

The upcoming release of Intel's Quad later this year will feature a native Quad Processor, instead of packing two natives into one package.

It's similar to how the Pentium D was just two p4's in one package, and along came Core 2 Duo, real Dual Cores.

if the rumors hold water, then the 8 cores may be utilized by the possible fc extreme (assuming that it will be editing 2k/4k possible footage), I am hoping that fcp6 will be optimized for multi core processors though, seems like for the past 2 years from fcp 5, there have been so many hardware changes, they need a rewrite to really take advantage of it all.

I guess we'll see when NAB rolls around. It does seem the timely release for such a thing. Regardless, waste of money until native Quads are released.

Better processing power, better CPU communications, lower temperatures and power consumption, etc, etc.

Is there any test of the difference with native quadcore, or how do you know it will make that much difference?
Sounds like the processors are old before they came out.:)
I need a new machine now to go with a aja card, and I been wating for the 8 core since november. But I guess its always something cooler around the corner...

Sentence edited for grammar and proper punctuation:

*For the love of god! It's Mac, not MAC.

Do you see how annoying it is when people get that detailed about something so inane?

Also of note is if you'll notice the new boxes come with the option for a quad link fiber card. There's rumor Apple has a new Extreme XSan option coming down the pike to line up with FCXtreme. You'd need that bandwidth for 2k/4k, etc.

As far as not being native, it doesn't really matter too much to me, its a speed increase and speed is what I rely on day in & day out. If it's not as fast as it could be, but its faster than what I have now, it's a worthy upgrade.
