Apple  Trailers

I used to watch movie trailers on Apple.com and then go into my temp internet folder, copy the file and open in QuickTime to view the Audio and Video properties. Always curious about the alogrithms used.

Now when I go to get the file in my temp folder, they show up as a 1kb file. Where is the full trailer?!?

What are they doing to to keep the full trailer out of the cache / temp folder?

They're doing what lots of companies do when they use Real, it's basically just putting in a shortcut to where the clip actually is, it makes it harder to find the actual .mov file. Why do they do that? Not sure. Paranoia maybe?

Soeaking of the movie trailers online. I was wondering about how they get such good compression. I know its hollywood but does anyone know what they are using? I would love to get better look video online.

You can usually find the real .mov file's URL if you look through the web site's source code and look for files with .mov and the file's resolution preceeding this. It works for me!

The compression isn't that great, I think WM9 is much better though quicktime is what I upload using. The "Team America World Police" trailer I downloaded is 480X272 pixels, 24fps. The video is 18.5mb and two minutes sixteen seconds and 2 frames for about 140k/s, compressed with Sorenson 3 Video, presumably at high quality. I prefer the mpeg4 codec, actually, but h264 will be the best when Apple releases it in the next version of quicktime. (It's already the basis for WM9, btw...)

The audio track is 1.8 megabytes or about 13.6k/s, 44.1khz (dv is 48khz or 4 channels of 32khz), and uses QDesign Music 2 as the audio codec. The bit rate in mbps is around 110 versus 128 for the average MP3. Oddly, apple uses the mpeg4 AAC codec for their itunes store. I think AAC is a superior codec.

Apple's settings are most likely closest to sorenson video 3 at high quality, keyframes are probably chosen manually (you can't do that without a good compression program, unfortunately). You can get close in quicktime player, and using MPEG4 and AAC audio probably get even better quality but lose compatibility with quicktime 5 and earlier.

*kbps for the audio bitrate. I'm tired so expect typos.

should I get sorenson 4? Is it better than compressor from apple. I would love to know.

MDfilms-

what are you compressing? for .mov. sorenson is the best. to be honest, i haven't actually compared too many options..but I went with that after hearing great reviews..and can only concur.

Re: Apple  Trailers

I prefer MPEG4, but I'm definitely not a pro at compressing. To each his own, I guess. I think MPEG4 is built into Sorenson 4, though, as an option.

Re: Apple  Trailers

A big reason why the compression is so good for these Hollywood trailers is because they are doing hardware based compression...as opposed to compressing through something like Final Cut's compressor or Cleaner (which is software based).

It's a big difference. But you can pay some big money for the hardware.

Great. Thanks for the info everyone. I still dont know if I should get sorenson 4 since I still haven't figured out what is best with apple's compressor. I'll figure it out soon enought.

Try reading some posts in the Compression Forum. If you still can't figure it out, start a new thread in there.
