Anyone using Google Ad Words with Success?

Do you use Google Ad Words to find new clients? I’ve worked with 2 still guys lately and they swear by it. One spends $100 a month the other $2000.

Since I am mainly a DP and do not do weddings, I’m concerned that by using the word videographer I’d get too many clicks from brides to be. If you are having success what keywords and locations do you use? I am in a suburb of Chicago so I was considering using the names of suburbs with large industrial parks and corporate headquarters.

Thanks,

Ned

I've been using adwords for almost a year. I have had a few calls but nothing booked. I get a lot of clicks and no inquiries. People click the ads and exit right out. I pretty much use their $100 coupons. I don't have the budget for thousands of dollars. If someone did have that much, I would assume it would work better. Even if you use videographer you can do negative keywords such as "wedding" to block out brides looking for a wedding videographer. Have you used Keyword Planner to help with what is popular in the area?

I've been using Adwords for about 6 years. I don't know how much good it does, but I still do it and don't spend more than about $60/month. (You set a budget.) You can make yourself invisible for searches with certain words e.g. "wedding". I wouldn't doubt it if your organic listing does well as a result of using Adwords! If you search "video crew greensboro" you get my organic (if that is the right word) listing, but if you search "wedding video crew greensboro" you don't see me.

Over $4000 is a lot to spend without knowing if it is generating income. You might consider asking each client how they heard about you. Might reveal some surprises that could help in future advertising.

OP here. After a couple of weeks using the basic Adwords Express I paid for many clicks that seemed to be from job seekers, so I was paying to have resumes sent to me. So I found a Certified Google Adwords Consultant and paid for two hours to sit side by side and he set me up properly. It is MUCH more complex than you'd imagine and these pros do this all the time, so that's what I have done. I learned that the biggest Adwords advertiser in the Chicago area is spending $6000 a month! That's a lot of weddings he needs to do to pay for it.

But in sum, the basic package of Express which is basically a dashboard that doesn't allow you to drill down and tweak, that's not worth anything so you have to move up to the real Adwords, which requires a consultant that knows all the tricks.

can we inquire as to what the consultant/fancy level of adwords etc. etc. ultimately ends up costing? also report back in a while if you would on how it has worked out for you (or hasnt)? thanks.

I hired a great consultant for 2 hours for $100. He is a Certified Google Adwords Agency. You need someone like him to tweak because it is so complex. PM me for info on my results.

I'm about to start experimenting with buying ad space on alternative newspapers similiar to the village voice which has sister publications in all major cities. I will also be buying web banner advertising on websites for my target audience. I will post my results on the forum. From everything I've read on Google Ads, they tend to work best with products and not services. Just my 2 cents.
