Anyone used these tripod heads?

i have a 503 and i love it but i would like to get something smaller and lighter that would feel about like the 503 when used on super loose settings (for chasing a snowboarder off a jump pans) - for packing in a backpack and shredding with all day...my sticks are superlight so the 503 makes the tripod pretty clunky...yea my tripod makes a clunk sound - is that normal?? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

anyone used these?

I have used the 3130, and while it's not as smooth or adjustable as the 503, I was able to get some really good results with it. If you adjust the drag settings right, you can effectively pan and tilt smoothly with it, and it deffinetly is really light.

I have a 3130 (or a similar head) and find it pretty poor for video work.

If it is the same as mine, in order to adjust the tilt friction, you have to loosen the whole top part of the head, resulting in it tipping to a dutch angle slightly. It is really annoying! It is also quite jerky.

That said, I probably use it more than my 503, just because if I am running about the 503 and legs are too heavy. I need to get something better for "run-and-gun" shooting really.

I've used the 3130 on every film I've shot with the DVX, and it has given me great results. I used a 501 last week with my HVX and while bigger, I didn't feel any more quality than on my trusty 3130... (though I will need to upgrade as the HVX rig is so much heavier).

I don't know if I just got lucky and scored a good 3130 or what. People have actually had made snide comments about my tripod head on-set, and then quickly taken them back when watching the monitor during shots. Most of my work is narrative features, and I used the head extensively to keep the camera "moving" for small tilts and pans during dialogue scenes as well as for tracking wides etc.

3130 easily supported my DVX with rods, anamorphic adapter, and matte box.

Maybe it is a different head to mine...? It looks just like my one but I can't find any markings on mine to indicate a model number.

Do you have the "dutching" problem that I described? When you loosen the tilt friction, the head leans to one side.

Maybe we are talking about two different heads here... I don't see a way on mine to get a dutch angle from the head if I tried. I would have to shorten a tripod leg for that.

This is the 3130: http://www.adorama.com/BG3130.html

Tilt is adjusted with the knob on the side. Pan is adjusted from the knob that is below the plate and faces up (can't see it in the picture). The knob directly below the plate facing down in the photo is just the handle adjustment.

The release plate is different to mine, but the rest looks the same.

As I loosen the tilt knob on the side, the whole joint loosens, allowing the top part to tip over as there is no support on the opposite side. Maybe mine is defective or an older model? I just thought I would mention it so that OregonDank can test for it.
