Anyone use this diffuser?

Aputure designed it specifically for the 672. They have examples on the FB Aputure User Group. It looks good. They'll also be coming out with a grid for it and, from what I understand, a complete softbox solution as well.
They were showing the above diffuser at PhotoPlus Expo in NY in October.

I understand they may be making some design changes. They don't show the actual product shot on their website. Nor does the link to the manual work.

Thanks, cseeman. Hopefully, it will be out in the U.S. soon (at BH, etc. ) hesitant to order on Ebay/Alibaba from China. Curious about their softbox, too. This one has gotten bad reviews and apparently causes overheating: http://www.amazon.com/ILED-Softbox-Diffuser-Aputure-672/dp/B00VHCJBC8

Do you have the Aputure lights? If so, how do you diffuse? I have gotten a few good suggestions from forum members here, but I do a lot of run n' gun shoots where I don't have time to set up a c-stand with a silk...

Important for the 672 is that the air vents not be covered. The ILED covers the vents so the light overheats.
This is why Aputure is making their own softbox. I believe Ted Sim said it'll be available by the end of the year.
You'll be able to get the diffuser plus gris or a complete softbox as I understand it. He said this at PhotoPlus and seems to have posted the same info on FB in response to people's questions.

Looks like the entire kit of diffuser and grid is $35.
Interesting given that previously diffuser alone was listed at $35.
I'll see if I can get more details.

Product Manager confirms that the diffuser and grid combination is $35 total.
He also said they're working on a softbox for 672/528 series in addition to this. Details on that "not set in stone yet."

They do look exactly like the prototype I saw at PhotoPlus in October.
Since they don't have product photos on their own site yet and the link to their manual is dead, I suspect we'll see the real specs soon.

Frist review. Doesn't include the grid though. Looks like it's a pre release version according to the reviewer.

Thanks, so this online... Cseeman, do you know when the units will be available at BH? "Coming Soon" on the page has been up for a few weeks... Also, any word on the softboxes? (i.e price)? Thanks

The product manager says he just got in the Grids so they'll be shipping to dealers shortly. My guess is that'll be a couple of weeks.
Not sure about the softboxes but I'm under the impression that it'll be "spring." That sounds about right given I saw the diffuser and grid prototype in October and it looks like dealers will have them mid January.
That would be about 3 to 4 months from prototypes to distribution. That would probably mean they'll be showing them at NAB in April.

The person who did the above review did note that they had a prerelease diffuser (although final) and did not get the grid for review (I asked). My hunch we might see the first Softbox reviews probably a few weeks before they ship.

okay, thanks. I'll keep an eye out on the BH page...

I have the 672S and just clamp a 36" diffusion disc to a light stand a foot or foot and a half in front of the light (easier than C stand/silk). Sometimes have 2 672s blasting through the disc.
This does look interesting, but my issue more than the closeness is the size- you don't get the effective large, soft light source that you might otherwise.

I have the prototype as well and it's very handy however I've been using a large Photoflex shoot through silk umbrella more often these days with the HR672s. It's a big 45" model. With a larger diffusion the light is softer and wraps better. You know the rule the bigger the diffusion the softer the light. Since the HR672s comes with a light stand adapter that has the umbrella holder built in it's an easy way to soften them plus the light is farther away from the the front of the LED's and that also will soften the source better.

I also found folding some black wrap over the new diffusion mounts is great way to get a barn door on them. I keep a couple large pieces in the kit.

Erik, is this the umbrella you use? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/42508-REG/Photoflex_UM_RUD45_45_White_Satin_Umbrella.html

Just yesterday I was thinking about getting some umbrellas for my new Lightstorms. What do you think about this Westcott model? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/63314-REG/Westcott_2001_Collapsible_Umbrella_Optical.html I was leaning towards that since it can collapse down to such a small size.

Yes that the one I have. The Westcott I'm sure will be good. Whatever you do don't buy a cheap one from Amazon. The build are really bad and the ribs will bend in a few uses. I drop one and it broke. Never again. The Photoflex is made to last as the Westcott probably is too.

I have also used it with the Light Storm and a Impact Swivel Umbrella Adapter. Old school works!

How about a 72" version!
