Anyone Use Facebook?

Hello all,

I am wondering how everyone here markets themselves. Do you use Facebook? Local advertising, word of mouth, post cards, cold calling, etc?

My business is beginning to really take off, but I am always looking for more ideas about how to get more clients.

Let us know your methods (if you don't mind)

I got a job 4 months ago bartending and that turned it all around. It's an ass bust I get up at 9 and go home at 4 am but the amount of people you meet is insane. Back in the day I'd take any job I could get. Took me two years to hate myself. After the bar I'm comfortably picking them. It's the only way for me here in a small town. I find the facebook etc very impersonal, and in a small town, even a business card is a gimmick. Nothing beats a drink with someone, from a coffee to a bloody mary.

no but it's head on interaction with your neighborhood. it taught me a bunch of things that's all, mainly putting aside my emotions and attitude and letting this happen. In beirut? yeah it led to tons of video jobs. I start at the bar at 5pm, before that my days are now full. We hold small screenings, and before and after peak hours are when ppl come in and chat.

I wouldn't spend a day abroad without business cards, but in beirut it's a bit different. I guess my point is one ahs to get social. In my case? yeah. Bartending got me over ten gigs in the last few months, plus a couple of murals plus i'm working on an ipad app with this company. All cause of conversation. My laptop is there cause I handle bar floor cash register and music, so I can always show my stuff. It's a small place I like it. Teaching me discipline I need that.

wow thats great greymog! I have always wanted to be a bartender and live the kind of life you described, even went to bartending school. but never could find a job :( I guess I look too good boy'ish to be selling tequila shots :(

dsleep: Yes I meet ppl at networking meetings at bars, but didn't think bartenders actually have time to socialize with the crowds.

It's true most of the time I don't usually have my friends come in cause I can't sit there and chill, it gets nuts after ten, but it's that seven o'clock on wards when the mature ones come for an after work drink. If it wasn't just me there I'd prolly be spending time handling the staff.

It's a nice life but I have no days off. I'm on dvx as I'm in jordan visiting family.

This could derail into a post about working at bars so for the sake of the op...

... the thing to take away is to have a good attitude, and the bartending is a good way to train yourself to force that irrespective of what you're feeling that day.
... ALWAYS have your work on you. even giving someone a link ain't like, 'dude, right here' (whips out laptop)
... and here's an interesting one. Don't take anything that comes. Have your criteria. It's big of you to say up front what you can and can't do. Anyone you meet can be a potential client later, and you shouldn't let the first turn down get you down. If you refer someone to someone else, they'll come back to you. One day, it'll be you.

It's socializing. If I were in dubai I'd probably have a much much colder formula. Just don't be a 'walking business card'. Be real.

There's something I've been saying for a while, but this is my case, and cold be different. There's a huge difference between video jobs and making your own films. I'm really in this for my own flicks. So the reason I took the other job is cause basically 'if you LOVE what you do, get another job'. That's just me though.

Also, the best and most boring answer to any question is 'a little bit of both'.

Bit of business practice, and a bit of personality goes a long way.

Personality saved the dogs from being filthy animals. I've never met a charming pig. :)

Greymog hit it on the head.

I use every social media out there (except MySpace..that was a waste of time) But I get a lot of my work from those interactions and being involved in film-making forums:happy: like this great one here.

I occasionally go to social mixers and get-together's as well.

One thing I don't do, is have business cards. I found that they were pretty much a waste. But I do carry a small pad of paper with me at all times.
