Anyone successfully encode H.264 on PC without gamma issues?

Has anyone yet been able to encode movies for viewing on PC using H.264 without falling victim to the gamma shift that occurs on playback? You know, that washed out, desaturated look.

I usually bump the contrast within quicktime pro. Helps a little but there are still side effects.

this happens in FCP too,

I tried lowering the brightness in the FCP quicktime export settings, but it causes drop outs in the export... is it just a case of a totally different CC for the H264 version?

only for windows, doesn't look that much better really from what I've seen
