Anyone shot anything in Mexico?

I'm doing preliminary research for a short that is set in a third world country. Tijuana or Mexicali would be ideal.

Has anyone had any experience with shooting/producing a narrative there? And what were your issues that were unique to shooting there?

I have shot south of the border a few times. First of all I would tell you to avoid Tijuana and Mexicali...very dangerous these days. Second have ALL your paper work done and approved well in advance. Work with the film office in the Mexican State you are shooting in they can smooth a lot of rough spots. And finally I find the safest border town these days to be Nogales. It has escaped the drug war violence for the most part and the locals are friendly and helpful.

Thanks Paul! Very helpful. I haven't been to Tijuana or Mexicali in years. Sad to hear how things have turned for those areas.

Video Production

I mainly do san francisco video production but have shot in Canada & Mexico before. The most important thing to have is the proper permits. If they catch you filming without them then you can get kicked out of the country & have your gear confiscated ( which makes for very happy border agents). When I filmed in Mexico , a short documentary I keep production very small and it was smooth sailing. Lastly, have at all times with you someone that speaks perfect Spanish !!!
