I have 200w LTM Fresnel HMI with mag ballast (metal connector) and 200w LTM PAR with electronic ballast (plastic). I want to replace the connectors so the PAR works with mag ballast and Fresnel works with electronic ballast. Is it a straight forward operation or am i missing something here?
Yes. I would basically start over with connectors. i would get the appropriate veam style connectors for the cables, heads, and ballasts and redo them all so that they are interchangeable. Unfortunately my cheat sheet doesnt have the 200w size on it. Id get ahold of LTM and start there.
What concerns me is that the PAR has a ignition switch on the head while the Fresnel gets ignited from the ballast (green button). I presume that means i would have to leave PAR always on so it can be struck from the mag ballast. So would the master switch (the large red one on electronic ballast) act as main (and ONLY) ignition switch for Fresnel unit?
The fresnel should also have a momentary on button on the head. Is it an old "mailbox" type? Typically all switches accept on Arri heads and are momentary units. The one on the lightmaker is not as well.
I bet you have the fresnel that is round and looks like a par but with a fresnel in front. I would pull them both apart and see if they use the same ignitor circuits. It might not be difficult to add a turn-on circuit to the fresnel if you can copy the par configuration.
The above is the fresnel i have that i want to rewire to connect to electronic ballast. Based on the pic of the PAR with mag ballast it seems that configuration is totally doable.
red - red in e. ballast (1)
blue - blue in e. ballast (2)
black - yellow in e. ballast (3)
blue thin - black in e. ballast (4)
violet thin - black in e. ballast (6)
blue thin - empty in e. ballast (5)
ground (green-yellow) - ground (green-yellow) in e. ballast
It seems that 3 wires of PAR head are used for switch and if i connect the wires together in ballast then the light will be continuously on as long as main switch is on.
What confuses me is that it leaves only 4 important wires (red, blue, black, ground).
When i look at wiring of Fresnel it seems there are 5 wires not 4 which means that i can potentially use newer head with older ballast (as seen in images above) but maybe not the other way around???
Test that extra wire to see if it's the safety circuit (you should get continuity across that pin and one of the other ones with the lens door closed but not with it open). If that's the case, you might be able to work around that issue by wiring it so the safety circuit is always closed, you'd just have to be careful not to open the door while it's on since it wouldn't shut off the way it's supposed to.
I'd give Gil at Galaxy Lighting a call and see what he has to say about the matter. He could probably make adapters for you so you don't have to do any of this rewiring, and you'd have the flexibility of being able to run either head on either ballast.
