Anyone know what a 'Sound Engineer' is?

Hi all, been a while since I last contributed here, so Happy New Year!

I have just listened to the evening Radio news magazine on BBC Radio4, and had to share this: ('PM' Prog. 16th Jan '12) (the bbc do weird things with links to their content, so I hope You guys in the 'sates can play it)
if You scroll to 52mins in, They do their 'Human Interest' item. You'll hear Bill Berloni (animal trainer) brought on to discuss the merits of giving animals awards (a respose to Spielberg's recent comments that animals should be so recognised) a fair enough debate.

For Someone Who is clearly a successful professional in the film business, I think it was wholly un-professional
to make such cutting remarks against His fellow professionals! - the inference being; 'They even give awards for Sound Engineering and I'm like whats that? .. does Anybody know what that is' (My paraphrasing)

He was very quick to snipe at the Sound Engineers, and even agreed that animals are just as good actors as Humans, but when asked if a Chiuaua should go up against Meeryl Streep, He quickly changed his stance, suggesting animals be given Their own category ('cos They're better than Humans, presumably!) (maybe the term 'go up against' conjures-up the wrong image, given the subject!)

My theory is He wants to get His own back after one of His pooches was up-staged by a particularly well-trained (and groomed) Rycote!

I think his point was more along the lines of - the audience doesnt know how it effects them. Still fairly misplaced - this guys seems to be coming from the perspective, Ive done this for 35 years and contributed to many films, yet according to the academy it remains outside of the scope of recognition. I honestly dont feel like he meant to stand on anyones toes - but managed to fairly comprehensively.
