anyone know if this is a good tripod?

I work for a school who have a couple of them and they performs surprisingly well. I think the legs on theirs are slightly different though. For the price it seems pretty good.

It doesn't have a bowl leveling head, but I doubt anything will at that price.

I did notice that the heads on one of them was coming slightly loose, but it has probably had a fair pounding by the staff and students. It wouldn't worry me much. I was thinking of getting one as a backup/2nd camera tripod.

I would spend $50 more and get this tripod:

I have had one for 20 years, and it is still as solid, smooth and depandable as ever. Oh, and I bought it used from a rental house, so no knowing what kind of abuse it had before me.

The velbon however just seems kind of flimsy to me.

I've got one of those Bogen / Manfrotto. I'm not sure if it is the same head, but mine is terrible for video. No spreader on the legs, the head clunks like hell. I only use it for stills or as a 2nd camera tripod (which I am thinking about replacing with the Velbon).

However, I agree that it is as tough as hell and will last longer than the comparitively flimsy Velbon. Personally I would go with the Velbon for now and look to upgrade to something better by the time it breaks:laugh:

wesley,

if it's the one that came free with my trv900 5 years ago, NO!!!!

it was a velbon, retailed for about $100, and it was a piece of crap. the head was made out of plastic and i think the legs were too.

i have the bogen 351 legs, 503 head. great tripod and head. a little under $500 - inexpensive for a good tripod and worth every $$$.

If you can afford more, do like Carl says. At this price, everything is pretty crappy though.
